Decided to make and area for me to sleep in the KJ since I do a lot of camping without the family. I didn't want to remove my back seat though so this is what I came up with.

Image
Stored in the back for travel with back seats up.

Looking in through the back of the jeep.

Looking in through the door.

Image
Looking back from the front seats.

I plan on making some legs for my shelf so it will be about 8" higher, giving me a little more clearance for my feet.

dude thats nice!!

i've got a bed roll from an old Army Arty fella that has a pretty heavy foam padding in the sleeping side of it

it's got a nice very heavy (and worn and faded) seabag style carrier and a flannel/cotton lining

super comfortable! kicks the crap out of the polypro junk we had in the Corps

looks like it would go perfect on your bedding platform

Thanks! I hope to get over to a surplus store soon to see what kinds of supplies I can find to help make it more comfortable. Right now the only mattress I have is one off an old camping cot.

I have a 12v battery pack from my Eureka tent with lights, a fan and a 12v heater so I should be set there, I also plan on making screens to go over my rear door windows so I can let air in without the bother of bugs. I'll post them when I am done with those.

I tried to make those screens on all the back windows and glass gate,
and when I did, it was right before summer. DO NOT USE VELCRO AS IT WILL NOT STAND THE HEAT OF SUMMER!

Just my advice!

Thanks for the advice Rip! I plan on making them like bags so they can slip over the door and have a magnetic strip along the outside bottom to seal against the jeep. Then I can just shut the door and roll down the window as much as I need.

don't they make some sort of 'button' fastener that bolts on, could attach it somewhere on the molding

but i think you've got the idea with the magnetic deal

I plan on bringing my Jeep AM/FM/weatherband/TV/Lantern unit with me and my DVD player. That should keep me entertained if it rains!

I also need to either tint my windows darker or make some sort of shades for the windows.

I'll be testing it all out on the weekend of June 27th. Going to go do some hiking/camping in the Peoria, IL area, so I'll give it a test run. :D

Nicely done 501. From some of my experience sleeping in rental 4x4's and a friend's truck, you'll definitely want the ventiliation and your idea of slip over bug screen sounds good.

I take it you're showing the mattress diagonally due to your height versus the overall length available. If that becomes too much of a pain, you could look into seeing if you could swap in the front passenger seat from a KK, or change to a KK, where the front passenger seat folds flat.

On the Kjs you can slide the passengers seat all the way up, fold it forward as far as it will go and gain about 4 or 5 inches. Thats the way I did mine and with the fold down little shelf gained enough to have enough room, of course I am not nearly as tall as 501

Thanks, and Yea, I'm 6' tall so I have to sleep diagonally.
I hope to find some foam of some sort that will cover most if not all of the platform.

If I can't find foam to roll out over it I will have to carpet it. I do plan on painting it all black for the time being.

I get to test it out next weekend, going to some camping and hiking in a State Park that is only 10 miles from home. So if I need to make some changes I won't be too far from home.

Definitely need the screens. I slept in my car one night instead of falling asleep at the wheel at 4 am...

Obviously I was so dead to the world that I didn't wake up until it was about 10 am. Sitting directly in the sun, the car was probably 125 degrees and I was drenched with sweat from head to toe.

Not fun. I'm lucky I didn't go to sleep at 6 am and wake up at noon. I'd have probably woken up dead...

That's what I was thinking, plus I'm a smoker so I know I will have it down part of the time. With the window guards I can even have them down in the rain and get some air without getting wet. I hope to use this a lot instead of hauling out the tent all the time.

I always liked that saying "I'd hate to wake up dead"!

How'd you build your sleeping area? Is your rear seats in when your sleeping area is laid out or do you remove it like Tom does?
