I'm thinking about fabbing up some wing ends, but I am still on the fence, I like the open-tire look. will look even better lifted.

Here are the before shots. (1st one is from before I turned the white letters yellow)

Here is the new front end, I will get some better pics once the sun comes up.

I feel much more confident about my approach angle now.

I have gotten quite a few comments about this already around town.

I had to paint the subframe/exposed unibody black to match the bumper, as it was red before and stuck out like a sore thumb.

I am going to take the whole bumper back off, sand, prime, and POR-15 the whole front end in my dad's shop's paint booth next weekend.

looks like a TJ bumper without the plastic end knots that i always take off for people :)

i like basic and durable, could always weld a skirt on the engine pan and put a prerunner sorta skid up to it

Actually if it was me I would cut more of the Wrangler bumper off! Make it about the same lenth as where the fenedrs come down by the grill. Shorten it by a couple of inches on either side or over past the holes if possible. Kind of hard to see in the dark for sure

Right now I have that piece of steel covering the radiator, I am going to be getting another piece to go between that skid and the shovel... I mean, Front Engine Skid.

It is a little more than an inch past that point on each side.

I would shorten it, But then the mounting brackets would be in clear view, and they stick out like sore thumbs, but once the lights are mounted I'm sure no one will even notice the length difference, I'm pretty sure this was a stubby bumper to begin with.

OK if you're putting on some lights then that will distract your eyes from that. Yes fab a skid like mine to cover the shovel and it will look great ( when lifted)

Haha, yeah, my halloween decorations are still on the rear windows, I've been meaning to take them down, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

but in all seriousness, this is one of the first projects where I did not somehow injure myself.

Hey Voodoo thanks for the bumper. The project is moving slow right now. I am working without a garage and its getting alittle cold, but progress is being made hopfully I will have pictures up in a few weeks. Here are some photos of my custom front that I did.
Taken on a phone all the rest of my photos got lost when my harddrive crashed.

Bumpers look great, Wish I could do something like that. My 04s turning lights are in the bumper.

Hey John, How did you cut the holes for the hitches in yours, I wanted to do that from the get go, but I am worried I will cut in the wrong place.

I guess I am asking more how you measured, rather than how you cut, but what you used would be good to know as well.

Also, for you guys with the '04s, You could just get a front fascia with turn signals off of an '05+ model from a scrap yard, and mount them up that way. I know the fenders are different as well, but if you can't mod them to work, you could just tear the fenders off the donor vehicle for the fascia.

I'd rather not, I feel it would compromise the rigidity of the unibody, and I'm going to get an ARB, so this is not a permanent solution.

It was more of a cut twice measure once deal. But, it turned out really great I thought, and there is almost zero space around the cutouts on my bumper. I did weld the hitches to the subframe in a few places just for that extra sense of security. To make the cutouts I used the trusty Dremel with those locking cutting wheels. I have used all of the different types of wheels they offer and those seem to last longer and cut the best. Anyway I measured the outside and inside distance of the hitches after I had them bolted and torqued. Then took those measurements and marked them out onto my bumper. After much double checking made the first cut and went to town. I had the bumper on and off a lot during this process test fitting so it did take some time, but it is a very do able project. I like this mod more than dropping a grand on a ARB cause to me thats WAY too much to spend on a bumper, rather would spend it were it counts like skids, rails, or lockers.

How did you mount them in the holes, I understand you probably used one (or both) of the tow hook holes, but did you drill all the way through the top of the subframe?

Where/how did you get to it?

on mine there were caps behind the original bumper. These caps covered the subframe. I took the hitches to a place that had equipment to drill the holes I needed. The way I mounted my hitches, they needed to be set back further inside the subframe so I could not use the hole that was in the hitch already. The size of hitch I used was 1 1/2 inch reciever hitch?.....its the size thats smaller than the 2 inch class 3 hitches. I did use the original tow hook holes for where I mounted everything together. You should not have to do any major drilling into the subframe cause those caps just come off. Now that is for my 2006 renegade. I know jeep seemed to think that redesigning the liberty every year was a great idea so I cant say for sure how yours will look. I do know that there should be at least two or three threads in the fab. section that cover the hitch install on various model years.
