It looks a bit glossy in the pictures. But I assure you it is a textured semi-flat.

A product that is nearly Identical to what I used is Krylon non-skid coating, which is what I used to paint a new rim to match the old.

Mine have been painted for over a year, and through a terrible winter, with no flaking peeling OR chipping. even after a couple of sandy/rocky muddy off-road expeditions.

http://www.krylon.com/products/nonskid_coating/

can be purcased at any sears hardware for about $4-5 per can.

I also painted my entire roof rack with it after my military grade stuff ($40 per can, 4 cans) decided it wasn't compatible with my self-etching aluminum primer. :banghead: :-)r

I just scuffed my silver paint, wiped them down, and then used Rustoleum black spray can with one of those nice handles. I also hit them with a few layers of clear coat.

I sanded mine down to the point where I was spraying on mostly bare, clean (freshly sanded) metal, which was then wiped down with Acetone, wiped with tack cloth, and then wiped with acetone again.

If you can. you should sand as far down to bare metal as you can, removing as much rust as possible as you go. if there is still rust, or you should feel more comfortable using a primer, I recommend using POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint, followed by the Krylon. as POR-15 does degrade quickly when exposed to UV Rays.

Painted my rims with Duplicolor Wheel paint. Just be sure to do your prep work for a decent finish.

rustoleum rust performer primer would probably give you the finish you were looking for, it's a charcoalish black though, not sure if it's avail. in gray

x2 on sanding the rims as good as possible

So how did your rims turn out??? i've painted a LOT of rims for my cars, but i almost always do them with automotive paints and a spray gun. sandblast or sandpaper down to nearly bare metal, prime, sand/scuff, then either single stage for my track rims, or base/clear for my street rims. Always had good luck with these methods.

On the occasion i've used spray cans, i start the same, sand, prime, scuff, then spray in many lights coats. usually 4-5 light coats so you don't get runs. also helps it dry faster. give about 10-15 mins between coats. I've found the textured paints make hiding blemishes in rims easier if you didnt get it sanded or primed perfectly.
