05Renny sent me his flares. I got them all cleaned up ready for the installation:

Here they are installed:

I plan on painting them with Rustoleum Hammered Black for Plastic (I use the Hammered on the roof rack and rear bumper, and soon on the ARB)

Thanks! I really don't like the light grey trim with the dark khaki but from your pictures Scout, you don't seem to suffer from that :)

LOL... I do have some plans in the works but I have to make the jump accross the pond. I really do love your rig, if I had known there was a CRD when I bought mine I would have one. Did you ever get a winch?

No winch yet. It will be a Warn but I have only been on trails with other jeepers and recovery ropesso it's been hard to justify the cost. Hopefully in the new year (I have one in my Amazon cart)

Thanks!

I had a DTT for the front (from 03CDKJ) but I ended up selling it (to Fortx4 KJ) because I knew I couldn't install it anytime soon. I would love to get ARB f/r but that won't be for at least a year based on funds. I am working on my brakes next along with the normal CRD quirk Maintenance.

Started painting my ARB front bumper this weekend. It was "millennium black" which was darker than my original sport flares, but not even close to a black.

My rear bumper and roof rack is Rustoleum Hammered Black so I decided to paint the front bumper to match.

Image

Here it is scuffed up.

Image

I used newspaper for overspray.

Image

Here is after the first coat. The Hammered is a little easier to use out of a rattle can than glass paints, but I it still looks splotchy.

Image

Here it is after the last coat. I used two and a half cans, three medium coats and three light finishing coats. I let it dry about 15 minutes between coats, it looked better if I waited closer to 30.

Image

Image

I am going to let it set for a few days, the paint takes a while to firm up, especially after lots of coats. On my other parts the Hammered has finished very nicely with a shiny coat of the mottled/hammered texture. I plan on using Turtle Wax Ice to protect it (my rear bumper needs to be refinished due to NOT following the steps I am taking now).

I have also had success on my rockers with Rustoleum Hammered, I painted under the plastic rocker trim. So far I like this paint and it looks good next to the Dark Khaki I have :)

Next up is to use Hammered Universal on the fender flares, I am hoping the texture from the Hammered paint looks okay with the texture in the plastic.

Glad you are doing the flares in that. Been wanting to try it on mine but just hadn't taken the plunge yet since didn't know how it would turn out

Amazon sells rustoleum hammered black for plastic for $5.5 but won't ship to Hawaii so I am stuck with the $8.5 a can universal hammered. I'll get to it in a few weeks I hope!

Well, wet sanding the front bumper didn't go so well. 1000 grit was too rough and I sanded too far in a few places. I'll redo it with another can and NOT sand it this time, I just hope I get the nice smooth finish like I have on all the other parts I have painted.

I did however start my flares today:

Using Rust-oleum Hammered Universal Black

Image

Washed and lightly sanded the flares with 200 grit, taped off the "rivets"

Image

After the second coat it looks very close to the traditional Hammered Texture, I am VERY pleased!

Image

The Universal cans have a built in trigger which makes it very nice to spray, however every time you pull the trigger you get a pop and hiss and extra paint comes out. I just make sure my first .5 second of the spray is not pointed at the object (like you should with any paint) and then sweep with a single trigger pull. Also, the last 1/10th or so of the can is VERY inconsistent with burbs of gas coming up.

For $2-3 more per can, I like it a lot!

Was that easy? I tried gently pressing, but didn't want to snap the plastic retaining ring so I just taped them off, too me a few pieces of tap to make sure I got it nice and straight.

The flares themselves had a lot of scrapes (05renny used his jeep a lot!!) so I didn't sand them SMOOTH, just took off the plastic burrs. More pictures tomorrow due to the 100% humidity here EVERY DAY... lots of drying time required.

Arengant, that ARB bumper looks lonely without a winch.

This is in my Amazon wish list:

http://www.amazon.com/Warn-87800-M8000-s-Winch-Synthetic/dp/B00625F8RW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2A2658ZNIAZ2A&coliid=IKLTON22RBD49

But I think a regear/locker would happen first. Next month the newest addition to our family will be here, so I will not be devoting much time to the jeep for a while :)

Good choice on the winch. And congrats on the new addition! :pepper: Gears, although not as fun and flashy as other modifications, will be something you will greatly appreciate when it's finished. Gears actually make the Jeep more enjoyable to drive and your transmission, torque convertor, and engine will like you for it. :JEEPIN:
