Soooo, I finally got around to finish a project I was planning on doing since earlier this year.
I LOVE it. You might not.
These LED's are BRIGHT. The pictures don't do any justice.
I have to get some better night shots.

Enjoy. (Video at the end)

Here are some other photos of the fabrication process.

Using a Dremel to cut the opening.
Image

Cutting out the inside of the tail light to make room for the LED's.
Image

The Tail lights ready for the LED's.
Image

The LED's mounted in the tail light.
Image

The wiring harness I made to make everything easy. I used a 3 to 2 wire trailer harness to make both lights on the tail lights flash together for the brakes and signal.
I also found the correct factory Jeep connectors to make everything plug and play.
Image

EDIT: I've added the connector information since it was requested.
There is a great site for all the chrysler family electrical connector parts - http://starparts.chrysler.com/

The connector needed for the tail lights is 05013988AA
Image

I had only found one online, so I found a very similar one that i shaved off a piece for it to work. look at the two and you can easily see where to trim it.

Here is the pinout of the tail light connector, and what the metal contacts on the light housing correspond to.

You know you could have just bought LED bulbs. They make some super brite ones.

I run these and they are extremely brite............

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2F315x-x45-T.htm#photos

No mods needed unless you use them for the blinkers.

those are really cool... great idea... good work with thinking outside the box.

tjkj... i almost bought some of those exact same bulbs for my back up lights....do you have them in your backups? if so how are they compared to stock? with tinted windows... and tinted tail lights... my back up's could use some help.

or maybe i could use put in 2 of those LED back up's that he used. dont really like the look but i bet they would work great.

Yeah.. I could have, but thats boring.
I want to have a different truck.
This was a fun project that I wanted to do and enjoyed doing.
:)
I had LED bulbs in my tail and reverse lights already. It was one of the first mods, five years ago.

Thanks. The housing is just the actual tail light that the Jeep came with.

That's one of my favorites, before I came up with the tail light idea, I was going to put a red one there to act as a rear fog light.
LI_KJ wrote:

Yeah man! It took a little while, but I finally finished everything, MUCH easier than I originally thought.
The reverse light is pretty bright, although, unfortunately the curve in the bumper points the light a little too much to the ground. It definitely provides adequate light though.
I am going to add a 55w halogen light in the rear as well.

I had thought about clear housings, and red housings that light up amber for the signal, or just using an amber housing that lights up amber. Many, many options. I finally decided to stick with everything red.
I used a Dremel to do all the cutting. it was very easy to control and cut exactly where and how deep I needed to cut.
If you have one, I would recommend using it. If not, good luck with the hole saw.
Either way, Have Fun!
