WARNING - PICTURE HEAVY :)

Hey - I just wanted to share my projector retrofit with everyone here. I am not the first one to do this to a KJ, but the first on LOST that I know of - there is a KK one floating around somewhere, anyway, ENJOY!.

This is done with one of the "easier" projectors, I will eventually upgrade to a "real" projector.

Everything was purchased from TRS - http://www.theretrofitsource.com
Everything you need to learn about a projector retrofit - http://www.hidplanet.com

Image

I started with a fresh Morimoto Mini H1 5.0 from TRS.
Image

I was worried about the foreground lighting since my headlights are ~39" off the ground.
Swapped in some 3.0 limiters courtesy of kcg795 (HidPlanet). (3.0 on the left, 5.0 on the right)
EDIT: New MH1s come with the 6.0 cutoff shield. so this step is not necessary.
Image

I bought some Eagle Eyes to work on so I wouldn't have any downtime on my DD.
Opened the headlights up.
Image

Cut off the halogen reflector.
Image

Trimmed the rear of the headlight to be able to tighten the locking hex nut properly.
Image

I modified the centric rings for the rear of the projector so it would sit properly in the opening of the headlight.
Image

Prepped for paint.
Image

Painted with High-heat paint. I let them cure for a week+ in my boiler room.
Image

Rear of projector mounted.
Image

Got some 100mm rubber housing caps
Image

Sealing up the headlights. I used 3M 08610 Window-Weld 1/4" x 15'.
Image

Routing the TRS Mopar Specific harness. I didn't have to use the resistors. I think the capacitor was the ticket.
The Mopar harness is necessary. Unfortunately the standard 9007 harness does not work.
Image

Mounting the headlights.

A couple of shots of the headlight on the truck.

130w Halogen 8" ProComp Long Range lights

Here is a terrible quality output shot. It was beautiful in person.

Some cutoff shots.

What was the overall cost?

Author:  infernicus [ Tue Jan 08, 2013 6:52 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: HID Projector Retrofit - '07 KJ

I ended up paying $408.25 (including some tax & shipping).
You can get away with it being a bit cheaper.
You can buy used parts, lesser quality products, or may have some from previous projects.
I ordered new headlights to work on so I can have a second set.

Hey thanks, the HIDs are 5000k bulbs.
That KK is "Jeepin_it_real"s Jeep, it is a beast. I think its a 6" inch lift, at least 32" Duratracs, ARB lockers in both diffs, 4.56 gears.

Haha, I was wondering when someone would pick up on that, lol.
That's a local beer in these parts. GREAT stuff. Their brewery is pretty awesome too. Now I know what to bring if I ever make it out there, lol.

If he has fun working on it, tell him to go for it.
It is such a GREAT upgrade. Really makes a diference when you drive at night.
A real projector retrofit is such an improvement over PnP HID kits. ..But I won't preach, lol.

I really want to do this. Is grinding down that metal ring the only modification needed to fit?

In reality, you don't really need to use that ring. I just wanted to so it would be easier to mount it in the center of the bulb hole.
The place you really need to modify is the rear of the headlight where the bulb sits.
You need to trim it down so you will be able to torque down the nut on the back of the projector.

Definitely get on www.HidPlanet.com and do some reading. You will learn plenty, lol.

I ordered new headlights to work on so I can have a second set.
I also added the inline relay for the high beams which aren't completely necessary. (I also bought a waterproof relay and socket, which added to the cost.)

So as far as upgrading from this. I only want to do a swap once. How much more is it for the true Hid projectors? and is it that much harder?
