So I took a trip up to Shamokin, PA today and did some site seeing and wheeling. Here's a few pictures from today. First stop was Centralia. I've just recently heard about this place and really wanted to see it. Not much to see anymore and there wasn't any smoke but this big crack is pretty awesome. If you haven't heard of it check it out. The second place is called "The Whaleback" I haven't read too much up on it but the place is absolutely HUGE. In one of the pictures (and I'll do my best to point them out) you can barely see two people. Just to give you an idea of how big the place is.

This is the one where you can see people. Now I'm exhausted and having trouble finding them myself but you'll have to trust me there in there. On the first roll, the whaleback, you can see them kind of on the left where it starts dropping down to the trees.

No idea what that building was we didn't stop. But that's exactly what it looks like to me.

Some day the whole area will just cave in more than likely .
Doesn't appear that its burning as bad as it used to or its moved on to other areas

They capped it off I'm guessing to starve it of oxygen. Still a pretty awesome area

If you go in the colder weather, you can find where the hots spots are by the steam coming out of the ground. That fire is still burning, and if you can find the "vents", the heat is still very intense coming out of them...

Can't really cap it off since it covers 100's of acres under there
They have tried different times in different areas but it just keeps smouldering
It'll burn long after man is gone from Earth

Very cool.

Although I don't live that far from Centralia, I have never made the trip. Need to get out there sometime.

See I didn't see any of the buildings though. I wonder if I missed some.
