Post subject:  Newbie intro & 2002 Rear Drum --> Disc Conversion

Hello all,

I am brand new and this is my 1st post. I have an 02 Limited, purchased used from original owner with 45K. I am crazy about this Jeep! I originally got it for my wife, but through a series of events ( sold a 97 Suburban, bought an 04 4 Runner) she has since taken the 4 runner, and I have inherited the Jeep.

My question - I tried to search this topic both here ( I've been lurking for several weeks), and google, but no luck so here goes - Does anyone have any experience with converting the rear drums to disc? This is specifically an 02 question because I think every year after has 4 disc. I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts or if anyone knows of an aftermarket kit.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to being an active member of the forum.

Welcome to L.O.S.T.

As far as the disc brake swap,it can be done, you need the disc brake mounting plates w/parking brake(left#-52128415AB,right#-52128414AB--both $127.65 each),caliphers(left#-05179731AA,right#-05179730,$81.61 each),rotors(#-52128411AB-$79.52 each),parking brake cables(since the discs use a different setup),brake lines(hard lines),and the soft brake lines. Not a hard thing to do just a little pricy since no one offers a disc brake setup for the KJ besides Jeep.

I just bought most of those parts to add the discs brakes to my rear D44.

TJKJ, Tell him about routing the e-brake cables. I have heard that part of the job is the worst and is a real PITA.

or hit up the junk yard for one too.

Troy, would you have to use Jeep rotors/ pads or could you go aftermarket?

You can use aftermarket rotors/pads,just as long as they are for a KJ.

Well after you rip the inteior out(rear part of the carpet needs to come pulled up) and center console it might be so bad  .

Thanks to all for the responses. So I guess the question begs to be asked -

Is it worth it? I intend to tow a small boat ( 18' 3,000 Lbs) or camping trailer

Did you notice a significant difference? Can you elaborate further or the need to possible remove the center console to run the e-brake cable?

Thanks again.
