Hi. i was rolling up the right rear window and heard a pop then whir. window will not go up and i can move in up and down freely by hand. I took off the door panel and found a cable all the way out of its housing. i had another person hit the switch up and down. the cable goes in and out. window is not affected. any ideas.
thx

Has happened about 8 time in my liberty. Known issue Jeep keeps "trying" to fix. Contact your dealer and barter out the best deal you can.

The plastic clip that holds the window to the cable most likely broke, just about every person owning a KJ has had the issue. You either have to replace the whole regulator unit or you can get an upgrade part from Steiger's and replace the plastic clip never to break again. Do a search for "regulator" and there should be some links pop up with pics and links on how to do it.

I just fixed my right rear on my 2006 this past weekend with the Steiger replacement & it was very easy :D

Quality was far & above what I ever expected & will be doing all the rest of my windows with his parts when needed.

Kirk

PS: instructions are excellent & only took me 1.5 hours exactly like the instructions said.

That will not work when the cable is the issue, only if the plastic tab on glass is broken.

I fixed my left rear yesterday with the steiger part. The part is excellent as are the instructions. There is a tiny machine screw with washers and nuts that is used to replace a small rivet and they even give you and extra screw, nut and washers.

x2 I have one in my KJ and not only was it easy to install but it is metal and a solid product, not that crap plastic everyone likes now a days.

Ok just a update here. I got the stiegers window part and kinda followed the directions. I found it really easy to do, The window was up and running in about 15 min. Jeep should buy this guys idea and fix this problem. I almost bought another window unit but now im glad i did not. it was that easy. :)

It is the window regulator mine was out of warranty and i still called jeep and complains. They put in a ticket and within the week i had both windows fixed. Both windows went out in 2 weeks. It's a known issue just not a recall but they are authorized to pay for it just call and get a ticket to take it in.

Edit: new fix replaces window also. call and witch it works.

Has anyone fabbed up their own replacement window bracket? I have to fix my left rear and looking at the Stieger site I can't get a good 3 dimensional visual on the part. Can anyone that has used the Stieger piece tell me if there is any reason a guy with decent fabrication skills can't make up their own bracket? It's too cold here in Ohio right now to tear it all out and leave the window flopping on a dailey driver. I just hate to spend $90 only to get the part and think I could have made that. For right now I've just clamped my window in the up position with a small pair of vice grips. Thanks,

Yes, Several have re-worked the existing broken piece. Most break in exactly the same place. I have fixed my LR regulator like is shown in the post below, and it has held for a year and a half.

Thanks for the reply and link Tex.

I guess I've been lucky so far. My Liberty is a 2002 with almost 100k and I put my windows down anytime it's warm enough and a lot of times with the heater running. Maybe running with the windows down all the time since it was new saved the weight and stress on the part.

Anyway, I'm armed with enough now to give it a try. I'll try to take it out this weekend and block my window up some way until I can determine whether or not I can make my own replacement piece. I'd rather fab something up in steel versus patching the plastic back together.

By the way, I'm not really a newbie... I just haven't been on the site in a VERY long time. When I logged back in I had no posts. Oh well. Later

Well, I pulled my regulator out yesterday and I can definitely see why it broke. I'm surprised that thin bit of plastic the cable threads into lasted this long. My plastic bracket was broke in other places too.

I'm sure as soon as I post this someone will point me to a thread saying I shouldn't have... but I bought the $45 + $10 shipping bracket off ebay. Couldn't find any reviews on it other than the short buyer reviews on the sellers ebay profile. All seemed good so I thought I'd chance it to save $50. I'll let you know what I think of it when I get it.

I do think I could make one of these brackets on my little mill but it would take me a long time to do it due to the precision required. I might use the new bracket as a model and start making one for the right rear (I know I'll have to reverse it from the left side) so I'll have it when it breaks. If I ever find a Liberty at the pick-n-pull, I'll pull the front brackets so I can start making replacements for them too.

Well, I got my $45 window bracket from ebay and have it installed in my regulator, but haven't got the assembly back in my Jeep yet. I did plug it in and gave it a test run... the bracket seems to go up and down smoothly.

It is all steel except for the nylon guides. The installation was straight forward. The tricky part was threading on the cable without messing up the spiral on the bracket.

Hopefully will have everything back together and a working window this weekend.

If this works... here are some pics of it beside the broken OEM piece:

I have it installed and working now, but I haven't buttoned up the door yet because I want to get some light grease to put in the cable track first.

Don't know if it is related at all but about a month ago my rear left window stopped working...the next morning I went to open that door and it wouldn't open either. I tried from the inside and outside of the Jeep. You pull the handle and it opens about 1/2inch(enough to set off the door open alarm) then gets stuck. Has this happened to anyone else? Did the window cause the door to stop working too? How do I get into the door panel if I can't open the door?

I'm clueless!
