Lift Laws By State

This is important to know. With current aftermarket parts most of us are fine. This summer is sure to bring us a wealth of aftermarket parts including some more serious lifts and such. I am posting the link to the website as it is a lot of info to post.

For those in MA, and any other state that follows the (WBxWT)/2200 rule, max lift height is 2.83" (that is, the actual suspension lift, tire + wheel height is not counted against you)

Code:

( Wheel Base x Wheel Track ) / 2200
( 104.2" x 59.7" ) / 2200 = 2.83"

Assuming Wheel Base of 104.2" and Rear Track Width of 59.7" (from jeep.com)

3" is approx. legal if you can get 3" of wheel spacers (1.5" on each tire) or change the backspacing on the tires, but then you have to make sure the fenders cover enough tire. By legal I mean that they can give you a ticket anyway, but you have a good chance of fighting it if you can tell them your wheelbase and track width allow for a 3" lift.

Man why does pa make so many laws about lifts? that just can't keep it simple.

I am assuming you (Renegade Dave) are talking reference to your KJ, looks fairly simple to me. Since you don't have a frame, they can't measure off that...so that eliminates one of your columns...you can't do a shackle lift...there goes another one...you can't do a block lift...so that leaves bumper height...you are allowed 24 inches up front and 26 inches in the rear...Even with a lift and 255/70's I still come in at 23.5. I have a spacer lift with a prelowered KJ, so I sit pretty high...

Most police officers either don't know or just don't enforce lift laws unless they are extreme (if you are running a tire larger then 37" or so).

I have never been stopped but I had a cop giving me a hard time and trying to site me for anything not legal on my rig. He busted out the tape measure and I came out at 23.5 when I am allowed 25". Likewise I have a good friend who owns a 1997 Ford F250. From the factory his truck is illegal in my state. He runs a 4 inch BDS lift and 35" procomp mud terrains. It looks nowhere near stock (he has the grill guard and everything). He has yet to be pulled over or ticketed. The Chevy dealer near me (like many others) sells trucks with 4-6 inch lifts which are not street legal...Nobody questions them. It really comes down to the cop as always.

what does the law say about trucks that pass through a state from another state. If they have different laws does the truck have to meet both states requirements?

Most likley you only have to be legal in the state where the vehicle is taged.
