I have had this problem for a year and cannot find the cause. I changed the sender on the rear dif.but no help. I lower the panel under the steering column and check for loose relays or connections and the problem will go away, sometimes for several thousand miles! What am I touching that makes a difference? This problem seems to occur while driving over rough road. Something shaking loose under dash?

I have checked and rerouted the wiring at the rear with no success. I just completed 1500mile trip and this is an ongoing problem. Once as I was slowly pulling out of a rest area, I lightly braked across a rough patch and I heard the ABS "grunt" and the lights immediately came on and odometer froze. I hit bumps(frequently in Illinois) and this happens. ABS controls?
Any more ideas?

just ideas

clean the ECM plug terminals and make sure it isn't loose and check for cracked/burnt wires, regrease the terminals and reinstall
may as well do the TCM as well if you don't have combined units

maybe try pulling the ABS fuse itself and see if the problem goes away, if it does, could put you in the right direction

not familiar with that combination of problems, separately, yes, together, no

This might sound crazy. But i had the same problem with the ABS light coming on and freezing the odometer. What i did was pull the inspection plug on the rear diff. And found that the gear lube was milky in color. This means water was mixed with the gear lube. I pulled the off the diff. Cover drained the bad gear lube. Cleaned the diff and put new gear lube in and have not had a problem since with the ABS warning light.

I had the same problem on a couple of occasions, and it wasn't the sensor (on the rear diff). What it ended up being both times was the wire that comes off the sensor - it rubs on various things and wears through, allowing the wire to short itself out. On my '02, it always rubbed on the e-brake cable. Once I figured this out, and got a new wire, I made sure I zip-tied the wire securely out of the way of anything else... and it's been fine ever since.

I ordered the plug and wire assembly from Amazon.com (best price!) Assemby of wires to plug required a 1/32" drill, flat end against receiver, to drive it into back of plug, almost all the way to front. The old plug had a wire broke off inside the insulation right at the plug body.
Dash light are out, odometer is working. sweet success!

[Replying to an old post...] Just bought a 2005 Liberty Limited that has the same problem: Brake light on, ABS light on, Odometer frozen.

I have seen that the driver's side brake sensor cable is routed along the steering column under the hood. I'll inspect this tomorrow in daylight. I have already disconnected both front brake sensor connectors and the light remains on.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Any more suggestions since this 2012 post?

I'm a new owner and have not gotten a maintenance book yet. Is there one that is better for the CRD Liberty models?

Dean.

Changed Turbo.
100,000-mile service.
Replaced harmonic balancer.
Noise in front axle or 3rd member - removed loose chain in transfer case.
Rebuilt engine - replaced #3 cylinder, piston, valves, head repair. Removed EGR.
Sheared bolts on TC. Replaced flex plate, TC, bolts.

As a new owner of a Jeep CRD be sure and read and study the NOOB GUIDE if you have not already done so. It contains a wealth of information!

Do you know when the last time the timing belt was replaced? VERY IMPORTANT! This is an interference engine and if it breaks or jumps a few teeth, really bad things happen!
They are only good for ~100k miles or around 8 years in age with most replacing before before reaching the limits.

The manuals for your vehicle can be viewed or downloaded from this site:> http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/

If you have any questions or concerns just ask, lots of very experienced and knowledgeable members on this forum more than willing to help advise or answer any question(s)....

Thanks again WWDiesel,

Amazingly, I reset the fault codes again and this time it cleared the theme of this string. [Brake light on, ABS light on, Odometer frozen].

The check engine light did come back on with the P0299 code. [Edited] I saw other posts here declaring P0299 is Turbo Underboost. I know I have a bad turbo so this makes sense.

I'll change the turbo after a couple more weekends.

I did contact the previous owner and he did not change the timing belt. That one will be on me as well. I'll probably do it before the turbo.

Here in west Hawaii, we never drive over 45 mph, and I'm a "Driving Miss Daisy" style of driver anyway.

Dean.

Makes no difference; if you are over the limits, you are driving on borrowed time and very dangerous. Simply not worth the risk!!! Could be a VERY expensive mistake if belt gives up... :grim:
Best advice: Park it till you can do belt and turbo all at the same time!

Thanks WWDiesel,

Just came back and re-read your post about downloading the manuals. This, along with the other manuals, is a huge wealth of information. And this is the good stuff too, not the watered-down auto parts store offerings.

I took advantage of your generosity and downloaded all of the 2005 Jeep CRD manuals and more.

Thank you very much.

Dean.
