Post subject:  Hard starting 2.5 CRD KJ 2003

I recently had my KJ serviced at an accredited service centre. This included changing the air, fuel and oil filter. I also asked them to look into the difficult starting problem I am experiencing on the KJ. They blamed it on the battery not holding the charge properly.

I did replace the battery after the service but are still having the same hard starting problem. Apparently a leaking primerpump could be the culprit? Allowing air to be sucked into the fuel system?

Any suggestions on how I can solve this problem without enriching the service centre futher??

Much appreciated

Howdy ChristoKilian

I'm guessing on the 2.5 - but to check air in fuel - you could lightly pump the primer - if it's soft - it probably has air in the system.
I know the fuel head is different from the 2.8 - but do you also have a lift pump in the tank? - for 2.8's - adding a lift pump eliminated the air-in fuel problems.

and FYI - for diesel issues - you might post down in

'Liberty CRD...Love that Torque!!!'

you'll get more responses.

Hi ATXKJ,

Thanks for the reply, I will try your advice. No there is no lift pump in the tank but will also explore that option. Strange thing is that I never had this problem since I bought the Liberty about 18 months ago. This problem started about a month ago out of the blue....

Will have another close-up look this afternoon.

The 2002 2.5 CRD (like I have) definitely has a lift pump...I am sure the 2003 also has one :?
TonyCRD on this Forum should be able to clarify this for you :)
Probably air in the system as stated before.

Also, is the dealer you are using the McCarthy dealership near the Fountains in Pretoria?
I used them when I was working in that area five years ago and found them to be pretty good then.

Also, have you checked the "CRD Love the Torque" Forum just below....this is the best place to post questions regarding CRDS!
