Jumper cables for when someone with a weak battery has left his lights on, engine off to help the guy who forgot a flashlight... A lighter is always useful, and so is a propane torch for heating up that stubborn bolt... And something with long sleeves. I always keep a old hoodie in my jeep, but I usually end up taking into work when I don't want to dirty my nice shirt laying on my back under a machine. Common sense would be a great thing in everyones toolbox. -Mark |

how about some good old MREs and a gallon or more of drinking water. i also carry a poncho (to lay on or wear in the rain), flares and a road guard vest to signal people with. oh when i was in colorado i carried a nice warm blanket and extra clothes... lol... with everything mentioned in this thread a roof rack does come in handy. oh and i never leave the house with out my fishing gear.

For the folks operating in sand, something a bit larger than a 2x4 is needed for a jack board. I carry a 1' x 2' piece of 3/4 inch plywood. |

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2662913/2 While not complete yet, I am attaching a link to my list. I figure it is best to create your lists by batch. I.E., one batch stays in the back of the Jeep all the time, another batch gets added for weekend trips, and another for excursions or heavy 4x4. There is just so much stuff on here you need, but that you can't always have with you-- so the batch/checklist approach is probably the best option. To keep reality in check-- weigh your list regularly. My two tool boxes are around 75 pounds. That is not too bad. My 72-hour kit with water weighs 55 pounds-- with ammo 76-- but it is configurable. You don't want to load down your vehicle any more than you need, so keep a check list for each situation and pair the load down as needed. One trick is to remove all undeeded packaging. If a tube of something has a package around it-- toss the package. If you need the directions cut them out of the package and toss the package. You can save some space and wieght by doing this. Eventually, I am just going to get a trailer for base camp and keep most of my stuff in it. Each persons list(s) will be different, and I hope to have my complete list soon. I may also list my 72 hour kit and electronic gizmo's as well. |

Mister fan to cool down the tranny cooler. On our last outing we had to stop at least 8 times, for about 10 minutes each to let the tranny cool down. A mister with cool water on the tranny cooler would cut that time in half if not more. EDIT: It wasn't because of crappy driving either, we were in Anza Borrego pushing 110 degrees in 4 wheel low going up hill with major rock crawling. |

I've seen either on SPIKE TV or the SPEED Channel a new set of sockets and open end /box end wrenches, that are better for worn or odd size nuts and bolts it look like a kit better suited for OFF road emergency, also J.C. Whitney has a electric impact wrench for quick wheel or really any other sticky Sitch around $30. But may just be the ticket just keeping the LESS IS MORE phylosyphy  :

Ouch!! Boy, that's a good one. See there... one of those stray water bottles right there in the front!
Okay, enough about all that  .
Here's another thing that I like to have around and soon I will have them in all of my vehicles. I know it's not really a "tool" but they are good to have around. It's called the Ready Freddy and I have one that lives by the door at all times. We tend to be a very prepared family . It's basically a back pack with everything you would need to have in an emergency situation, food, water, first aid, wind up radio, flash light and emergency wind up phone charger, etc. There is a lot of stuff provided! Yes, I know that they are spendy, but they are just so darned organized and easily packed up if you're on the fly. |
