hello diesel fans...I am a diesel freak, I love em, until they break. I own dodge ram diesel, vw jetta tdi, vw rabbit diesel, diesel tractors, diesel dozer, So now I bought an 06 crd with a stuck engine. ANd I mean stuck. I'm in the process of pulling the engine and finding out what's wrong. I do know that previous owner never changed oil. Oil came out of the drain plug like warm peanut butter so I basically know what to expect the bearings to look like. So I'm thinking this is going to be more $ than I want to spend. So I was entertaining the idea of retro fitting it with a cummings 4b. Has anybody out there seen or heard of this swap. I would appreciate any input on this, Thanks in advance |

If you are going the retrofit route, take a look at this Cummins engine, it would come closer to fitting in the Jeep CRD than the 4BT engine with the least modifications... They are already installing them in JK's... https://cumminsengines.com/repower.aspx

http://www.drivingline.com/articles/39l-cummins-engine-4bt-diesel-pros-cons/ 4BT / BTA are HUGE. Like nearly additional 400 pounds HUGE. and with half the horsepower and 70% of the torque AFTER cranking them up to 'bomb' AND adding intercooler and exhaust. They are tough though. And easy to get parts for. The Cummins repower 2.8, however, is aimed directly at Jeeps. Both diesels and otherwise. Still pretty gutless stock, but you don't have to fight with FCDJA to get a good tune, and you'd have great domestic customer support. One would have to be pretty married to the Liberty to put another 8k-10k into it, but once running, it's probably the last money you'd have to spend on engine stuff. The rest is still a Jeep. Tits, warts, and all. EDIT: Then again, if GDE starts doing combined tunes to make them work in place of factory CRDs..transmissions... That could really sweeten the pot. |

Over in the CRD section there is a guy who has two 2005 CRDs for sale. You could buy one of them and swap motors for less than the cost of a 4BT swap. I like the idea of swapping in a 4BT but that engine is taller and heavier. You'd have to modify the front suspension to support the weight. And probably cut a hole in the hood to allow room for the valve covers. And then there is the issues with all the electronics which means you would probably have to swap the transmission for something like a 700R4. If you have lots of time and a unlimited budget then you could probably build the Liberty into a super awesome monster rig. Personally, I'd rather get an old Bronco or F150 and put the 4BT in it. Lots easier. |

Not to mention putting a 4BT in a '06 vehicle is illegal since they stopped making 4BT's in 2005. |

Forget it. That engine is to big and to heavy. Ive seen three 4BT swaps into Toyota FJ80's and they barely fit inside that engine bay. That vehicle is three times more "stout" than the KJ and its a complicated swap with that vehicle. Go with another CRD motor OR a Cummins repower swap. |

The 4bt is the equivalent to a big block in weight and the r428 weight what a small block does, with a 4bt it would drive and handle worse than a Cummins powered truck in the snow lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
