Hey all, The sales person at my local jeep dealership told me something kinda cool about the jeep grille, but I forgot what it exactly was.....something about 7 continents. I'm trying to tell a friend what it is all about. But then again the sales person at the dealership coulda been jerking my chain. I'm hoping someone has some insight. Thanks in advance for any info! :)

never heard the 7 continents thing, think he maybe pulling your chain (or towstrap)
Ford originally designed the 9 slot to cut down weight of the original models made for the military , then after WWII when they started making CJ2s and 2a's they put 7 slots in them as a distinction between military and civilian models, which started the 7 slot era
Later on some of the other models went from 7 to 9 and back again
But again never heard the 7 continent story and I had thought I had heard all the good ones

I have heard or read something about the 7 continents. Something how a Jeep could survive/wheel through all sort of obstacles.

The seven continent story would only work in America. European countries consider North and South America to be one continent. Or so I am told by my buddy from Germany. Maybe that's a story too.

93 through 95 Grand Cheerokees had 8 slots. In 96 they went back to 7.

That's when a Grand owner/Jeep exec thought that Great Britain was the 8th continent. He got fired just before the 96's rolled out.

Heck make up your own and tell everyone, very few even know how Willys (Jeep) got started or who actually designed and started building them. Most do not know that Ford built them as well. Ask most where the word Jeep came from and you get 3 or 4 different storys

During testing of the Wiley's for the military, an officer observed the vehicle jump over a hill and fly into the air, land, and continue going. Said officer, exclaimed, "Jesus!" out of surprise of the vehicles feat. Another officer corrected him by saying that word is blasphmy, so he told him to use another word. The officer thought for a moment and said "Jeepers" meaning surprise and showing emotion to replace the word "Jesus." he had just uttered. The people around him like that word and one of the company's marketing guys said, "Hey! let's just shorten that word to just "Jeep" and call the vehicle that name." The rest is history.

And I've read somewhere, Jeep came from the character named Jeep, in the old Popeye cartoons that caught on with the military.

That's the first time I've heard the 'Jesus' comment - I've heard/read the Eugene the Jeep (from the Popeye comics)
probably a dozen times in different magazines.

I am surprised that it didn't come to be known as Kilroy then

I have heard, read and been told so many good stories over the years as to the start of it ,
but I think Tokyojoes may be one of the best ones that anyone has came up with in quite a while

That continent thing sounds like it is an adoption from military trouser belt loops saying, theres 7 for the 7 continents, which if I'm not mistaken predates vehicles all together.

We should have a get together and then go visit that salesman, and everyone give the guy a different story about the 7 slots in the grill haha

I think you all are mistaken. It's not the seven 'slots' but the six 'columns' that are significant.
