Post subject:  1995 jeep grand cherokee wont start

Hi guys, this is the only jeep forum i belong to becuase i used to own a kj but i have a friend with a 1995 jeep grand cherokee with the 4.0 inline 6 that will not start. Not even crank over.

Battery is fine and it has a brand new starter and still nothing. You turn the key and nothing. I am thinkin something to do with the ignition, does anybody have any ideas, she really needs this up and running by tomorow.

Any help is appreciated!!, Thanks

Crank position sensor

We had a 98 Grand and that's exactly how ours acted, when it decided to not go. We changed our ignition and even borrowed a computer for it. No go. It ended up being the cps. The cps just shuts everything down, for some reason. We were told it is a very common issue to happen.

Get back to us, when you do find out what the problem was.

So the engine doesn't rotate? Is the new starter hooked up properly? Was the starter installed with the proper spacing/shims to operate? Can you see/hear the starter engage?

Jeep ≠ Car, unless you like killing cats.

The starter could have a bad ground, be improperly installed, or be defective.

If I remember I'll grab the manual when I get home tonight and see if there are any other causes.

new clue, the starter was fine, but when they happend to move the steering colum down, the car started, so there is a short somewhere. What kind of short would cause the car not to start? Also the stereo cuts out from time to time.

The housing on old wiring can get brittle and break, resulting in shorts. I'd play with the steering column some more, see if I can cause the short again. If it happens again, there's a wire near it that needs replaced.

The stereo could be the harness in back coming loose.
