Pinion bearings. It's a low pinion Dana 30, and being a '96 most likely has the cv drive shaft. If it does, get rid of it. Go to the junk yard, pull the yokes off a Cherokee, or some grands with a normal u joint style shafts. There all the same for the axle, but not t-cases. The 249, 242, etc. has a bigger front out put then the 231. A 231 might be a good option to, if you have "all time 4x4" the swap will give you a 2 wheel drive option.

The u joint looks like a cross, the cv will be round and have a rubber boot on it. U joints are stronger then the cv, and are serviceable. The cv is basically worthless, and brakes easily with bigger tires, lift, etc. I would suggest taking it to a diff shop, setting gears up properly isn't easy, and requires lots of very expensive tools.
