My regular Cherokee has roof cancer. Nothing can be done. So, I am looking at a new vehicle. I need it to be capable of some light-mid duty off-loading. I am looking at all kinds of stuff from England, Japan and USA. For this discussion I am looking at Libertys and Grand Cherokees. None of the 05ish Grands that I see have "trail Rated" badges on them. What year did Jeep start that?

It started in 2003 but doesn't really mean anything.

Agree. I don't think id take a liberty, Grand Cherokee, or Renegade stock on the Rubicon trail. because that's the requirement to get the "trail rated" badge. not sure how any one can go stock on the Rubicon trail???? and comparing the liberty's to a Renegade is just plain wrong!

what, you wouldn't want a wrangler? if I had the time and money id buy a TJ or JKU.

don't get me wrong, I love my KK (even though KJ owners think their ugly) and would not give it up easily! unless Jeep made a Diesel Jeep here in the states and had real lockers with a 4:1.

Doesn't mean anything in the sense that Jeeps without it have the same components. Skid plates are hit and miss even on the Trail rated Jeeps. And I've had Wagoneers, Cherokees new and old and Wranglers. I bought what I liked, The Liberty fit what I was looking for. Another Wrangler didn't. I think if your trying to turn your Liberty (KJ or KK) into a Wrangler your never going to be satisfied. If your goal is to make it the most capable vehicle it can be you'll be happy.

The OP was asking about something capable of light to midrange off-roading.

OP - Good luck in your search!

well, if Mr.Grumpy wants to off road here and there the KJ and KK are great choices. but if they have a slight passion for Wranglers, they'll probably try to build the KJ or KK into a Wrangler. <- this is my issue. I bought my KK with a burning passion for Wranglers but didn't want to spend the money on one ( I like new or slightly used cars). loved my KK stock, and now that its far from stock, its going to make it harder to get rid of. <- which I don't plan to.

I thought that the Trail Rated thing Added a bunch of little things that added up. I have the exact opposite disease from most of you: I want to buy it and foget it and not constantly modify it. To my naked eye my Cherokee looks like it has more clearance than the liberty does or even the grands. I know the truck I have now isn't "trail rated" either but ALL jeeps were back then.

The trail rated badge doesn't mean anything.

If you want a ready to go offroader buy a wrangler rubicon and use it.

Otherwise just about any true 4wd with lo range suv is a good starting point for mild offroad use.

Hell I wheel a kia sorento.

looks like some one was stuck... :goink:

don't worry, I was too last time I Jeeped. poor judgment. at least 5 other lsd trucks passed me. then my open diff TJ friend got stuck. we were using the wrong recovery gear, but I took it easy on pulling him out. my tires to my astonishment had a good bit of traction.

no I am not in the picture.

Yeah it gets stuck. Has open difs and was leading the pack on fresh snow which hid the ice that hid the mud. When it breaks through the ice it's done.

I use the kia for exploring unimproved township roads over in pa they are what you call logging roads.

I have a dedicated offroad rig and at this time the kia, I've had many daily driver "stockers" and registered on this site when I had my kj.

It is my opinion for what most people consider offroading an ifs rig is better. You get more clearance with smaller tires.

If you are doing more extreme stuff that's where the solid front comes into play.

If you notice alot.of the king of the hammers rigs are independent all the way around now.
