My 98 zj needs the front and rear differentials rebuilt. How do I figure out which ones it has and the gear ratio? Trying not to buy the wrong stuff.

Are the metal tags attached to one or two of the diff cover bolts still there?

Plug in your VIN number on website (link below) to see OEM build sheet.
4x4 axle ratio should be the same for front & rear. 3.73 is one commonly used ratio.

Ive seen these go for well over 200K and still be fine unless you have abused the doo doo out of it or just want to change gear ratio

When it was up in the air And I tried turning the wheels you can feel the slop when rocking it back and forth. It was worse on the passenger side. I just installed the new cv axle on the drivers side and it doesn't have e any now. Should I go ahead and to the passenger cv axle?

I just installed the new cv axle and hub assembly. Had an ordeal. The parts store gave me the wrong hub assembly and axle. With the right ones installed there's no slop when you try to move the wheels back and forth.

I will test drive it in a little bit. Maybe that's what my noise was the bad cv axle. Image

The reason I thought the diff may need rebuilt because when I googled axle and diff noise on YouTube and it sounds like the same noise.

I'm guessing your on the right track and don't think you need diffs rebuilt but wouldn't hurt to change the oil in them!

Everything seems to be working right. Now I just need to hit 55 mph when that noise started before.
