My daughter just joined the Jeep ranks with her purchase of a 1986 XJ. Looks good sitting next to the KJ.

Her driver's side door won't open. I've removed the door panel as much as I can. The rods, from the inside handle, move the mechanism partially, the outside handle moves part of the door mechanism too, but not enough to release from the striker bar. I can't see the mechanism and the Haynes drawing isn't detailed enough for me. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance...
Craig

Does the door close tight when you are able to close the door. If it is hitting the door striker low, it will not allow the door to open. What is happening is that the latch is not able to push the door away from the striker. If this is a problem, check the hinges and look for space between the body and the hinge. This is a common problem when Xj's are flexed from heavy wheeling or wind slamming the door open. If there is a space, the door needs to be removed and the hinge beat back into place.

If this is not the case the door latch assembly is fairly easy to remove. All you need to do is remove the door panel and disconect the rods from the inner door latch and remove the Torx. screws from the latch assy. A good cleaning of this assy. will do it good. Let me know if I was of any help

Thanks Brian,

Sorry for the slow response. Was busy getting my son moved out of state for college, and doing other work to my daughter's Jeep. I haven't tested either theory yet, both certainly sound possible.

So far, we've changed motor mounts, transmission mounts, plugs, wires, cap & rotor, starter relay, hatch supports, battery and tires, in preparation to send her off to college, in the midst of these repairs, the door stuck.

Will let you know on the door repairs when complete.

Thanks,
Craig

Thanks Desert Liberty,

I was able to get her door open today. It helped to take the seat out for better access. The door definitely had some serious sag, but hey, it's got's 244000+ miles on it. Bending the hinges helped.

Thanks again for the info....
