I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted to mount a stock KJ rear tire carrier bracket onto a rear XJ hatch? It seems feasible enough to me, although the only problem I can see is the weight of the tire(in my case a 31) on the stock gas struts that lift the entire hatch up.

I am not thinking of doing this yet without more research and NAXJA is not to helpful with this topic. I realize that the KJ stock mount is on the lower half of the rear hatch that swings out to the left, so weight isn't that big of deal for the KJ guys. It's more or less a tailgate with vertical mounts, correct?

Any engineer insight or general advice would be great. If this is a looney idea I can stand a little thrashing I suppose.

Thanks in advance,
Coullt

The hatch struts will not hold the hatch and a tire up in the air. I also wouldn't trust the weight on the fiberglass hatch. Suppose it could be made to work but a swingaway would be easier and better.
