I just sold my liberty but replaced it with a 92 XJ has the 242 transfer case but wanted to add a 3" lift kit. I was looking at the Rough Country 3" lift kits and one comes without lower control arms for 245 on ebay and the other comes with the lca's for 320. both kits come with 4 shocks, long add a leaf's, swaybar relocation bracket and 2 front coils.

Are new lower control arms necessary for a 3" lift? Is it worth paying the extra $75.00 for them? Will I also need to get a pitman arm lift?

If I'm only getting a 3" Lift is it necessary to do a SYE conversion? It's a pain in the rear for a np242 I know

I think I want to run no bigger than 30x9.5R15 tires is that a good size for the gear ratio and gas mileage? I also don't want to do any fender trimming. will just a 2" spacer lift be enough to run the 30x9.5 on stock rims without rubbing?

Thanks so much for advice.

Catherine

Yes, a 1.75"-2.0" spacer lift will be fine with 30x9.5's on stock wheels. The only rubbing will be the tires to the lower controle arms. You will get more flex with a 3.0" but I would recomend getting at least lower arms, a transfercase drop & adjustable trac bar. The stock brake lines are fine if you keep the swaybars hooked up.

I started out stock with 30x9.5's then went to 3.5f/2.5r and now 4.25f/4.0r with 32x11.5's

just flip through my cardomain - see signature.

You would have to bumpstop and trim to keep from rubbing. I know folks running stock lowers on 3" w/ no probs and wheeled hard on 31's. Make sure you have good bushings in them. A 30" tire will work well and the setup should flex good enough for a lot of wheeling. Front Discos and remove rear bar if equipped!

for 31x10.5's I would say go for a good 3.0" lift. You will want a set of 15"x7" wheels with 3.75" to 4.50" backspace or 15"x8" with 4.5" to 4.75" backspace if you want to keep the tires from rubbing the lower arm when turning.

I ran the 3" with my old 30x9.5's for over a year, NEVER rubbed on the body, but with stock wheels they did rubb the lower arms (tread lugs hitting at full turn), aftermarket tubeular arms would have fixed that.

I did my lift in stages.

1- Rustys basic 3" HD kit with rear add-a-leaf (3.5" front + 2.5" rear)
2- 0.75' rear shackles for 3.25" rear (I should have got the rear spring packs)
3- 1" transfer case drop
4- adjustable front tackbar
4.5- added 32x11.5's = lots of rubbing (did a little trimming)
5- replaced stock(short) #2 leaf with a home made full length #2 leaf (gained 1") now at 4.0" total rear.
6- added 0.75" front spacers to level it + Rustys upper & lower arms + brake lines (4.25" total in front)

I should have just gotten a full Rustys 4.5" kit with full rear springs & arms to start with. But that would have been alot of $ all at once. I did this over about a 2.5 year time.

BEST bet.... if you don't want to keep "playing" with the lift. Just get the 2" spacer kit and 30x9.5's. When you go past that, it never ends  .

NEXT is a 6"-7" long arm kit (Full Traction) with Bushwacker cut-outs & 35's  .
Then D44hp front & 9" rear... see what I mean, it never ends.

I just ordered the 2" lift kit with front coil spacers and rear add a leaf and 4 new shocks for $230 including shipping. I noticed that when you get into a 3" lift kit it opens up a whole can of worms. I'll just run 30x9.5 tires and call it good. I don't want to get into doing a sye conversion because I have the 242 which isn't very friendly. I still need to be able to get into the thing when I'm wearing a dress. One Sunday morning I was getting into my liberty and I ripped the side seam to my dress all the way up my thigh. Couldn't go to church like that! So I don't want to get carried away with a lift. Besides the vehicle isn't worth putting a lot of money into. I'm not into extreme off-roading anyway. Oh, the way the XJ sits right now the stock rear leafs have a negative arch. Is that the way they are supposed to look?

Almost all XJ's I have seen or worked on have been like that. I think they were flat when new, then sag down like that. If you look at the rear part of the spring you'll see why I did a full-length #2 leaf. That 4"-6'" part of the main leaf that isn't supported really starts to get negative arch if you flex it alot, mine was starting to get a permanent BEND in it from going full flex all the time. That's why the full-length gave me 1" lift even though it had a little less arch than the stock one I took out.

On a side note, should have warn the dress anyway, would have been the talk of the day  .
