I've seen an article on swaping in WJ calipers on an XJ for better stopping power but the catch is you have to use TJ knuckles and there is some machineing to do. My question is why not just swap out the whole front axle providing the gearing is the same? Then you wouldn't have to mess with that complicated conversion to get larger front brakes. Here is the link for the conversion I was talking about

http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/brakes ... /index.htm

this was also a note related to doing the conversion http://www.wjjeeps.com/brakes.htm

It looks like all the mounting points are the same between a wj and an xj front D30.

So in review, wouldn't it just be easier to swap out the whole axle?

You actually use WJ knuckles for the swap and TJ or late model XJ hubs.
I am converting my HP D30 to WJ brakes and high steer. (which is another benefit of the WJ swap) BUt it is going itno my KJ. You could also look into the Vanco disc brake setup which is way better than stock and on par w/ the WJ swap. (minus the high steer advantage)

Can you swap the whole axle, yes I guess you could (not sure why I have not seen that addressed before) but I know a lot of people don't get to the point of upgrading the brakes until they have already regeared and gone to larger tires (which is when the brakes show up as a weak link) so it is cheaper and easier to just swap the brakes, knuckles, etc. at that point.

FWIW, Mike Rollins, author of that 1st link, is MJR on here and NAXJA and he is considered a Jeep mechanical Guru. He is extremely knowledgable about all things XJ, or Jeep for that matter, and he is a great guy.
