I came across one and am considering picking it up

I know it has the 8.25 in the rear 29 spline but I am reading that in front it has the lp30 and only 27 spline in the lp30, can that be right?

Yes. They switched over to the LPD30 in the later model XJ's.

ok so you can have 27 and 29 spline running together, I thought it was like with the gearing it has to be the same ratio.

I know HP30 is preferred but how is the durability on the LP30? If I pick this up I only plan to run 33's with 4.56

spline count doesn't matter... All that this refers to is the number of splines on the axle shaft. Only the gear ratio makes a difference

You should be fine w/ 33's regardless of LP or HP. HP is just prefered for a few strength and driveline angle related issues that are not that big of a deal until you get to larger size tires, etc. Plenty of 33" tire equipped LPD30s running around out there.
