OK.... Here's what I'm looking at. '94 XJ, 130,000 miles, bone stock. Neighbor kid down the street. For the 6 years I've only seen it move once and that was last year.

Here are the problems:
1) no title. Last place registered was Georgia.
2) no Key. The kid said it broke in half, and then he lost it.
3) Kid drove it back from getting the oil changed, and said the tranny started slipping around 40 mph.
4) got some oil on top of the valve cover, and looks like some spry on the under neath of the hood. Nothing that scared me away, but It was getting dark, so I didn't get a chance to crawl under or around.

What's the deal with getting a 13 year old, out of state jeep smoged in CA?

The kid paid $1500 for it at least 6 years back, and now the association is all over them to put it in the garage or get rid of it. People are tired of looking at it. Well they can't move it because of the key. And they (kid and family) have no idea about it. They were having a family, when I went down and told them about putting the transfer case in N to roll it. Then I asked if they wanted to sell it. They told me they were talking about donating it to get rid of it. I'm kicking around abut 500 bucks. I would like a project, but not a pain in the booty.

Any heads up I should look at, JJ?

The best part..... It's GREEN!

Yeah your right. I just liked the price, but the lower I get, the more of a POS it's going to be. I need to find something that's mechanically sound, then I can project the rest together. So I'll put my $$ back under the mattress.

Title: Find out how hard it is to acquire a lost title, some states it's a real canine of the female gender.

Key: Once you have proof of ownership the dealer might be able to cut you a key for the Jeep's VIN. Vehicle registration usually works. Have the current owner try this since it will take you longer due to the lost title. I've done this with Green and Grumpy, much better than the copy of a copy of a copy that I usually get when I purchase the vehicle.

Trans: Some stop slip might buy you some time, but be prepared for a rebuild or replacement.

Rebuild: If you are the adventurous type order a DVD that show you step by step how to do the rebuild, otherwise check CraigsList some guys rebuild trans in their garages for extra cash. Example: Green van, local shop want $2500 for a standard rebuild if I take it out, CraigsList guy $750 with lots of hot rod upgrades.

Replace: www.Car-Part.com to search for a used transmission.

Oil Spray: I don't know what this is without looking at it. If you can get the engine started watch under the hood as it runs, have someone rev the engine a little too as you watch.

In the pics the body looks to be in good shape, but that color is Image. It's ok though, flat black Rustoleum and a paint roller can fix that.

I say go for it, but start low, stupid low. Offer $300 and work up from there.

Been doing some research on this jeep, and I'm going to buy it. Well basically they are holding it for me until the lock smith can get out to cut a key for it. Then i'll warm it up and drive it around the block. Then give the yes or no.

I know the people selling it, they live next door behind me. It their kids jeep , but he has a job that gives him a company truck (must be nice) so that's why it never gets driven. But they say it drives fine, except for the "tranny slip" around 40 mph. We are all thinking fluid may be low or bad. So when I get it all heated up, i'll do the smell / taste test on the fluids. I've crawl all over this thing. inside out, underneath and top to bottom. It looks good. nothing that caught my eye to scare me away.

It's a US Boarder Patrol jeep that was sold to this guy in Atlanta at 117K miles on 1/28/05 for $5k and he brought it out here. The kid below me paid $1,400 for it 2.5 years ago and now it has 130K miles. He never drove it because he never registered it. (more below) It has all the paper work and I ran a carfax on it. All came back clean with the Atlanta guy doing "routine maintenance" on it. All the kid has done to it is change the oil about 6 months ago. I ordered a build sheet from jeep. So all in all, I think i'm going to get this. $500 bucks. If it all goes south, clean it up and sell it for a K. Roy said he would work with me if it needed tranny work.

The kid down the street never transfered the title, or registered it in CA. Last address on the registration is an apartment in GA. So basically, the dmv still thinks the Atlanta guys owns it and it has just disappeared off the map. I'm going to do a Lien Sale on the Atlanta guy, and not even include the kid.

I called the lock smith and he will make a key for 100 bucks. The kid is going to pay for that, because even if i don't buy it, they are going to need a key. So there you go. What the hell. I need a project.

Does it need tires? I have a slightly mismatched set of 30"s that would get you by for a while. They are on the Al. TJ rims that came on Seans TJ so they are presentable.

That's great. The tires on it now I wouldn't even use them as a tire swing.

I have always been tempted to buy a trail rig but I am slowly turning my KJ into that anyway. :?

Is this thing going to be all a serious trail rig, something you can just bash the crap out of, or are you going to keep it kind of nice but still wheel it?

I don't know what i'm going to do with it yet. What i'm looking for is a reliable off road cruiser. Be able to put some miles on it while exploring the back county taking pics and camping with the boy and not have to worry to much about getting stuck. Mojave trail. Death valley, Sequoia, Mammoth and places like that. I did the "hard core" rock stuff, and that really wasn't my cup of tea. I would like to keep it looking stock, with a lift and tires. Then as it gets dents and damage, start replacing with aftermarket stuff. 1st thing I would, after the lift and tires, is a rooftop ARB tent. Maybe for next summer.
