A friend of mine has a '99 XJ with a liftgate that won't open easily.
When you pull the lever to open it, nothing happens. You have to lean against the liftgate, while pulling the handle before the latch will release.

Any suggestions on what to look for?

Thanks.

Ed

There is a cam in the rear hatch that wears out (wears a slight flat spot). I had mine go on the trail... wouldn't close. I ratchet-strapped the gate closed to get home.... just a little ticked off
After I got it home, I ripped it apart, and welded the thickest washer that I could find to the mechanism. Works slicker than snot on a door handle now. I know... I should have taken pics, but I was not concerned about that at the time. Sorry.
Common XJ problem.

HTH!!!

The original OP had a difficult time opening the latch whereas you had a difficult time closing your latch. Are they two of the same problem?

I sprayed grease on my latch and that fixed my problem. It now opens smooth and easy.

I believe so.
When I was able to get my gate closed (level ground, in my garage) I was unable to get it open without crawling into the XJ, prying up the plastic moulding, and manually pulling on the latch from the inside. Yet another PITA.... I came real close to selling the ol' girl that night!!
And yes, I greased up the mechanism while I had it all apart.
