When cleaning the TB on the vehicle you can rev it up to open up the butterfly. Just remember it will start choking out so you need to keep rev it so i does not die. A better way of cleaning it is, yes to take the tb off and clean that way.

Do I need to remove these two torx screws for better cleaning?

If you remove the TB from the intake, then you can remove those two bolts, but then you wouldn't have to because you would have access to the back anyway. If you did it as is, you would have to remove TB anyway to get plate back on. I would use some fuel injector cleaner on a rag, open the butterfly manually with jeep not running and clean back of plates/TB walls. The only way you can really get the back of that clean is to remove whole unit and clean the backside.

No reason to remove the butterfly screws. With the unit out you can manually open the butterfly to full throttle and clean it. I would just take the TB off from the manifold. so much easier to clean it completely.

The previous owner bought new tires and never had them rotated. According to the receipt, these tires have approximately 12,000 miles on them. Anyway, I finally had the chance to rotate them. And as you can see, they still have lots of good rubber on them.

The Jeep pulls to the right, so I will be taking the vehicle into Firestone for a lifetime alignment.

When I bought the Jeep, the only air ducts (vents) working on the XJ was the defrost. No matter which position I moved the vent control knob, it only blew air through the defrost vent. Anyway, I figured the vent door was probably broken, but I learned otherwise. Thanks to the NAXJA forum, we found the problem. I had a vacuum leak coming from the accessory line under the hood. I guess a vacuum leak disengages the vent door and causes the door to default to the defrost position. Anyway, it all works!

A few weeks ago I met a guy in Sheridan, Wyoming who’s a Jeep gear-head. He’s currently laid off from the railroad, so he’s got some free time to wrench. This is what we got done over the weekend.

1. Changed the plugs (I seriously think that we may have possibly changed the original plugs at 169,393 miles, I know it doesn‘t seem possible, but I had a misfire code on each cylinder and the plugs were completely toasted)
2. Replaced the coolant
3. Changed the front and rear diff fluid
4. Reattached the A/C and Heater vacuum line
5. Replaced the broken windshield wiper nozzle
6. Replaced the wipers
7. Replaced license plate bulb
8. Replaced the bulb for the engine compartment
9. Tightened wiper motor bracket
10. Replaced loose muffler with new clamp
11. Changed the transmission fluid, filter, and gasket
12. Replaced the serpentine belt
13. Changed the thermostat
14. Greased all zerks
15. Checked brakes
16. Changed transfer case fluid
17. Checked U joints
18. Checked ECM for codes
19. Checked battery charge
20. Checked alternator output
21. Checked starter draw

Yes, it runs better, more responsive, and I’m pretty sure the fuel economy has increased. I still have an unknown front-end noise/vibration, but I’m going to have an alignment performed sometime in the next few weeks to see how much it helps.

After speaking with Dirk, I have decided to go with DPG Super Ultimate 4" Hybrid Kit. Dirk agreed that this set-up would be best for what my needs are. I can run a 31" - 32" tire without needing to trim.

Is that 4" hybrid kit going to be a long arm kit? If not are you going to get drop brackets for the arms?

No long-arm, but I went with drop brackets. According to Dirk, the 4" hybrid kit is the best for ride quality. By adding the drop brackets, she should ride like a Cadillac. :SOMBRERO:

Today was a good day, I went down to Firestone and had a lifetime alignment performed. After the alignment, a lot of my front-end noise dissipated and the Jeep rides much smoother. :D The tech said it was really out of whack. Based on how well this Jeep was maintained by its previous owners, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was its very first alignment. Poor Jeep, I think she’s a lot happier now.

Not yet, I’m still trying to save my pennies……plus, Christmas just took a big chunk out of my pocketbook. Dirk said he doesn’t stock most of the suspension parts anymore, so I might just order one part at a time instead of attempting to save up for the entire kit. At this rate, I have no idea how long it’s going to take. I get distracted by all my other projects.

Hello this is Dustin, aka Rokee1998, I have a 1998 XJ with a few more miles on mine. I pal around with 1996XJ, he and I have done alot of work to mine. He owns a 1996 XJ.

If you want a rear bumper, I purchased mine from www.jcroffroad.com, it is the stage 3 bumper, and is by far cheaper than any other rear bumper with the swingout tire carrier.

Check out my pics on the XJ discussion page.

I have been to JCR's shop and all of their products are very well engineered, and built.

I will be ordering my new front bumper from them very soon, their prices cannot be touched, their bumpers look just as good, if not better than most of the competition. These are very well built, nice welds, great finishes.

I have learned a lot from 1996XJ about mine, and some of the issues we have come across.

You may experience some heating issues especially with off roading at slow speeds, XJ's are notorious for heating up due to the engine bay being crammed full.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact 1996xj or I.

Dustin
