Just want some opinions my liberty crd is automatic and works great for everything I need it to do but now my wife wants to use the liberty and go offroading so now I want to buy a xj just wondering whats better for long term and more aggresive trails and offroading standard or automatic I am very new to this offroading thing but im addicted what are your thoughts

The automatic transmission in the XJ is pretty resilient. I'd take an auto any day over a manual, but that's just me. :JEEPIN:

I have wheeled my XJ for 5 years now with an auto, no problem, I do however suggest getting a Hayden tranny cooler, heat is bad on those AW4 tranny's especially at low speeds, u can pick up a cooler for about 40.00 and it takes about an hour to install, I have aftermarket temp gauges on my A post to monitor engine and tranny oil temps, tranny never gets above 150 when wheeling hard in the summer months

There are advantages to either. Some like the control that a manual gives you coupled with the generally more robust & simple design. Watch older XJ's manual tannies ...some bite badly, like the puegots.
