Post subject:  My 2001 XJ build and repair thread

This is the start of my build and repair of my 2001 XJ. First things first I want to get everything looking good and working correctly. It does have over 180,000 mile on it and needs some attention. Number one on the list HEAT.
It is starting to get cold around here and not having a defroster sucks. I figured out why I got the XJ so cheap, the heater core is out. A shop would charge as much as 1,000 bucks so...... I already bought a heater core and also a evaporator core. I figured that I only wanted to do this once so might as well replace them both while it is all apart. Pretty much the whole dash has to come out so it should be interesting. I will post pics. The fun begins tomorrow. :)

Thanks,I bought a paper FSM the other day. I new I would need one because this looks like you have to take a lot of things apart. :SOMBRERO:

The morning started out well, things came apart fairly easily.

My oldest son was a lot of help.

Then we tried to install the new core and evaporator core. Oreily's auto parts sucks!! (we need a Napa around here)
As you can see by this pic the old core and new core are not quite the same. Close but when they go into a plastic housing the tubes have to be bent the same and they were not! Also the evaporator core was not even close they gave me one for a grand cherokee. So after going to three different part stores I found a heater core that was correct but nobody had the correct evap core. It will be here tomorrow so I guess this is why I picked a long weekend for this repair.

It really was not to bad It came apart easy enough. Having the FSM is Nice. And having the help from somebody that rebuilds cars is invaluable. Myself I have never had to take apart the dash of anything before. So it is all new to me. My son has to go to Oklahoma to get a hood for another car in the morning so i will start putting it back together before he gets back.

Sucks about the windshield. Time for auto glass claim?

Speaking of an auto glass claim…………. The wife thinks I should get full coverage on the Cherokee. As it stands right now, I only have liability which is CHEAP! If I decided to get a paint job, then I’ll get full coverage for sure. But…………Jayme doesn’t have a bad idea. I also have a crack in my windshield spreading from the bottom corner of the drivers side to the bottom corner of the passenger side. I wasn’t planning to take my glass out until it’s time to repaint. Hmmmmmmmm……….maybe I should look into full coverage.

I will give that a try. But hmm.... I had the ground off the batt during the heater core install.

Thanks Dustin. I'll pass the info to my wife. She's the one that asked about it yesterday...... I personally dislike full coverage because it's a lot of money going out of pocket when you never use it. :banghead: By the time it's said and done, I could go out and buy a new car for all the insurance money I've paid. :banghead:

Hmmmm, let me talk to the wife. She doesn't feel that the XJ is reliable, LOL. But she had no problems driving it from Montana to New Mexico this summer (over 1,000 miles one way). :ROTFL:

Well..... I'm not afraid to try to fix just about anything on my jeep. So When I started on this project there was the chance that I would screw something up. I figured out why the air bag light will not go out. Along with no horn, and no cruise control. I did not center the clock spring when we put the steering column back in and broke it. At least it does not look that hard to fix. But Hey the heater works great. :JEEPIN:
