93 Cherokee Sport-4.0 I6 -277000 mi
Changed the power steering and water pump and belt about 1000 mi ago.

Yesterday it ate the belt, so I put on another. Got 5 miles and the front V of the belt shredded off.
Dug the pieces out of the fan and drove the last 40 miles to home with no problem.
Put another on this evening and within 5 minutes, exact same thing-front of the belt gone
All pulleys move ok.

Any ideas?

The power steering pump is what sets the tension. Tightened enough to not squeak.

I would check the alignment of all the pulleys. Take a straight edge and place it on the front of the pulleys to make sure that they are in alignment. An out of alignment pulley in the set will eat belts.

Thanks for the help.
I did not press the power steering pulley on far enough.
Seems to work now :)

Had the same problem on my Comanche with the 4.0. It was the harmonic balancer. The rubber isolater around the serpentine pulley failed and caused the pulley to come out of alignment. Figured it out after the third belt.
