with an sye you need a double cardan style shaft with the slip in the middle, just like the front shaft. a regular shaft will not work because you need the slip in the middle of it because it is no longer slipping from the tcase.

CarNut, what is the overall purpose for your Jeep? Is this going to be a daily driver, trail rig only, something that you want to restore and be in top running condition, or just a weekend warrior? Depending on your overall goal, how we respond to your questions may differ.

That information will be helpful. Having a solid all-around vehicle is the way to go. The only difference is that my XJ is taking on more of a daily driver role; therefore comfort, quality, and longevity is also important to me. Since my jeep was neglected, I’m slowly replacing worn-out parts.

I have a prelude for my daily driver and a CRX for a primary back up. I wasnt really looking for a jeep and this one came along at the right price so i jumped on it. My first Goal is to get it on the street. That said I want to use quality parts and do it right the first time. for instance the fuel pump I could probally get away with just replacing the screen and running it that way but why no since i am here put in a new one so i dont have to worry about it. The Jeep came with a SYE and and a stock Drive line. So I am wanting to do it right. So for the drive line I can use a stock front drive shaft and just install the Double cardan joints or is this something that i need to have a local shop fab up for me? Any links would be helpful as well.

Oh one more thing I saw a suggestion mod on another board about Drilling out the yokes and using Ford U-joing tabs the ones that are like a U bolt with nuts. Any of you guys running yours like this?

That's the best solution.

If it were me, I’d buy all new drive shafts and call it good. I would order everything from Tom Woods http://www.4xshaft.com/

people install the u bolts because the oem style straps are more prone to breaking offroad. i wouldnt be worried about it though.

Ty guys for all your input on this build. It has been very helpful. I have been looking through build threads and can't wait to hit the trails....I live a mile from a farily decent wheeling area so test and tune will not be a big undertaking to do.

i went to the site and i didnt see any pricing info for just a driveshaft for the, I sent them an email hopefully we get it sorted tomorrow and i can get the thing by this weekend......i can dream cant i...

looks like its going to be Thursday for the fuel pump install. The parts store didnt get it in until 7 tonight. I contacted Tom Woods and it looks like i am going with the top of the line shaft with the longer travel slip & spline (XC or XB Spline) for $299.00. 35" long with the 7/32 gold seal u-joints. I will be getting that ordered 2m they were closed by the time i got home and got the meausrements.

Excellent Choice! You’re one up on me! I still need to order a SYE and driveshaft. I’ll be taking the same route as you did.

Well it just seemed to make sence. The sye was on the jeep when i bought it. So the double by going with that shaft makes going to a larger lift in the future more simple.

well i got the Fuel pump in and drove the XJ around the property. she pulled good but when i got down on the back acre she jumped out of gear on the T-case. I crawled under and she would not go back in. I could hear the tranny spinning. but the beast would not go anywhere. finally she went in and i got her back to the drive way. As I was pulling in she jumped back out. Today I pulled the T-case apart and she was dry, no metal or anything like that in the bottom, I didnt see anything binding, I put it back to together filled her up with Dex II and still nothing. I am not sure if this is related to the SYE and if the guys that did the SYE did it correctly. Any suggestions? Also where can i find a quality rebuild kit for it? looks simple enough to rebuild.

That's not good. I bet they never filled it back up when they were doing the SYE.

It might be more affordable to buy a salvage yard T-case.

I've heard that most XJ transfer cases most generally need a new chain and new shift fork pads.

did some reading going to check the shift rail, I saw something in JP magazine where they did the sye and they said with the new shaft end off to move the shift rail in as far as it goes and cut it off flush with the face. I also watched a vid last night on Youtube from advance Adapters that stated this needed to be 1" and no more. I recall looking at mine today and thinking that is longer than an inch so guess what i am going to check next.....
This site has them for 400 with free shipping......

Thanks I will keep an eye out, I am hoping that maybe they just got something out of place. I found an online service manual that is fairly in depth so I think i will pull it apart and then just check it out of the shift rail thing isnt the problem. Whats the worst that can happen....i have to find another T-case....

Well the tom woods drive shaft arrived on schedule but i havnt been able to get the t-case to go into gear so its pointless to hook it up. I did get the chance to remove the outpjt shaft housing on check the shift rail. First i removed the plug for it. Nothing. Then the housing again nothing. So next step will be to remove t-case and tear it down. Can you guys think of anything else?

Unfortunately, I’m a bolt on and bolt off type of guy. I don’t know much about auto mechanics nor do I have the time to mess with those sorts of things. If something isn’t working right, I typically replace it. I’m pretty much worthless when it comes to your situation, lol.
