Hey all been a long time but I am back in a Jeep. I picked up a 92 Cherokee, 3.5" lift, 4.0 Automatic, The tires, lift, and Sye are all new. I picked it up from my former brother in law. He ran into some hard times and I got the jeep cheap.

That is the good, here is the bad, SYE has been done but no rear drive shaft. He tells me it needs a telescoping type but my research tells me i need a CV type. Anyone know? Want to get it on the road so i can hit some trails. Anyone got a link for the one i need?

Thanks in Advance.

a lot of guys pick up a front drive shaft from another auto cherokee out of a junkyard and run that in the rear of their rigs with an sye. you need a double cardan style drive shaft. if you want to buy a good aftermarket one call tom woods. you tell them the length you need by measuring from the lip of the sye flange to the flange on the axle and they build one up.

lets see some pics!

Ty for the info I bring it home 2m, the banks were closed today so I couldnt get the full amount to pay for it but i put a sizable down payment on it. Once I get it home I will post some pics and change my signature to reflect it. I will also know more about the specs on it too by then. So when i make the call for the Drive shaft I will be more educated. :JEEPIN:

well got her home tonite. sorry still no pics. I get there and the SYE was installed but the yoke nut was not tightened so I was tighting it got it all the way down thought ok one half turn for good measure and pop.....not sure what it was but the yoke was still tight. went to move the jeep seems the T-Case wouldnt go into netural. Linked to the Sye install? She wouldnt start the fuel filter is clogged or the pump has died. He said he that he had it running about a month ago. oh and the key was mia, So after gong to the dealer we were told that the key is no longer avaliable thru Dodge for 96 and older.......so new ignition switch...

Anyone got any ideas ont he pop? and the T-case? I am hoping it was the yoke seating.

Did your brother-n-law disclose these problems to you prior to the sell? It sounds like the Jeep has been in poor working order for a long time and very neglected. I realize that my above comments aren’t helping answer your questions, but I would further question the condition of the Jeep; otherwise, it might not be worth buying.

I don’t want to rain on your parade, but I would get the Jeep to run first. Once you get it to run, then you can worry about the driveshaft, then the transfer case. One step at a time, as each step could take time, money, and patience.

That is the plan. I had it running then it died like it was out of gas we poured a bit of gas down the tb and she starts right up. So the will be either a fuel pump or filter. The jeep has sat since 08 but he would start it about three times a year. The order i have decided to attack this is just like you mentioned.
1. Get it running
2. Moving uder its own power in both 4 hi and 4 lo. ( no rear drive shaft atm)
3. Get the rear drive shaft sorted. (btw he did have the orginal laying around)
4. Attack anything he did half way and put the cosimetic stuff back together.

Oh and thanks for the advice it is always helpful.

Gas from 2008 is most certainly bad. If the gas is under ¼ tank, then I would recommend filling the entire tank with fresh fuel to help dilute the bad fuel. Also, add a bottle of HEET into the tank. There’s most likely a lot of condensation (water build up) in the fuel, especially in Oklahoma!

Is the fuel filter on the rail? If so, the filter swap will be an easy fix. If you have to drop the tank to get to the fuel pump, then you might as well drain the bad fuel out. :2cents:

The 1997 - 2001 XJ's have fuel filters, but they are inside the tank and part of the fuel pump/sending unit. CarNutCertifies has it easy!

The offset will be fine.

My description is probably clear as mud, but you need to right click on the photo, then you need to select “properties”, and then you can copy the website location. Go to the forum and click on the “img” icon and paste your web address into the img location.

Example: I right clicked on your photo, selected "properties", and this weblink appeared:
http://carphotos.cardomain.com/images/0 ... _large.jpg
Now, in order to view this without having to click on it, I would need to click on the "Img" icon in the menu above the post. Paste the above web address into the "Img" text and click submit.

Ah ty i did everthing except the properties part. When i would view post it said"image" where the photo would be. I will do what you suggest and pkay with it.

So what ya all think? I pulled the fuel filter last night hence the "bed pan". I have seen ice tea with less color. So the tank is coming dowm this weekend. Full drain and clean out. If avaluable i will probally change the strainer on the pump as well.

Well, I think the XJ is one of the best Jeeps known to man, so I think you did a good job for choosing it! The paint looks like it’s in poor condition, but that’s somewhat expected from a 1992 model. The paint on my 2000 XJ isn’t good either. My concern is that it’s been sitting for a long time, so be aware that there will potentially be numerous annoying aches and pains as you wake this Jeep up. With that being said, the 4.0L is a good motor and can probably defy most odds. You may also experience leaks from the engine and transmission due to aged and/or dried out gaskets and seals. The high humidity in Oklahoma will always be a concern, especially as RUST takes hold. I would imagine that you have a lot of condensation in the motor, transmission, and in all your fluids (motor oil, transmission fluid, differential fluid, power steering fluid, and brake fluid). So basically, be prepared to change all your fluids.

I'm not surprised, that's some old funky fuel.

Smart idea!

This weekend wasnt as productive on the xj as i was hoping. Had to run to okc an pu the gf rx8 seems they had to put an engine in it.... But that is a thread on another board.

I did however get the ing. Switch changed, the tank dropped. Drained it, fuel pump out, changed the filter, and battery charged. I dumped gas down the tb and had the the gf move it a foot or so fwd and back under its own power. So 2m i will get a new pump get her i.stalled and back together and get my measurements for the driveline.

any suggestions on where/what to use for my driveline? I have the orginal one but am under the understandi.g it is to short.

to get it moving under its own power you can pull the front shaft and run it in the rear with the sye installed. a lot of people do this to save the $300 on an aftermarket unit.
