Ok so I'm looking at picking up this XJ from a kid REALLY cheap. Its an 1989 4dr 4x4. Only thing wrong is the tranny wont always shift outta 1st gear. He said it was something about a tranny selinod or w/e. Any ideas anyone? I'm think I woul dbe better off just grabbing a used tranny off Craigslist for a few hundred bucks and throwing it in, or would it be better to mess with this one? Sorry I know nothing about XJs yet, I had a YJ and now I have my KJ.

There are a few things you can troubleshoot before changing the trans. Could just be a fuse or bad ground. Try unhooking the tcu and manually shifting. If it works it's an electrical problem. If it doesn't work then try changing the filter and flushing the fluid. Worse case scenario pick up a Craigslist trans for a few hundred bucks.

X2 When I bought my XJ, the trany wouldn't shift into overdrive. Once I got it home, I did a drain and fill about 3 times over a course of two weeks with Amsoil ATF. The trany shifted into overdrive with no problems after the first or second drain and fill, I can‘t remember for sure. The XJ was badly neglected when I bought it. Look at my build thread and you'll see how black the power steering fluid was, not to mention how dark the trany fluid was. I also dropped the pan and changed the filter.

Yeah, these XJ's are very affordable. Even remanufactured engines and transmissions are CHEAP!

Well here is the new project Jeep. I still have my KJ, but this is the new project wheeler. I'm thinking 4" lift, lots of triming, 33s and no doors for starters  Something I can wheel hard and not worry about bashing up.

I plan on owning it until it runs into the ground.....witch may not be long lol. My thing is, I don't know if I should keep it streetlegal or go all out and build a kinda offroad only rig. I have a trailer and truck here to trailer it with. I haven't had an offraod only rig in years. My last one was a 78 Bronco on 38" TSL's with a bigblock  So I dunno what way to go right now. Forsure though, I plan on a 4"lift with triming and 33" TSL's and no doors.

Once you decide whether or not you want to be street legal will answer most of your future questions.

It seems that most XJ folks would say that 4" is as high as you would want to go if planning to keep it street friendly. The XJ will need a lot of frame supports if you're looking at moderate to difficult off-roading.

Either way, it will be enjoyable to watch the direction that you take.

Well first things first...gotta do the normal wear & tear stuff. Gotta have the tranny fixed and thinkin about having the 4.0L rebuilt. Once I get those two running smooth, then on to the fun stuff  Anyone running 33's on their XJ? I'm thinking about this 3" kit from Zone http://zoneoffroad.com/product?ki=34&gr=-1 I would do this kit and alotta trimming to fit the 33x12.50R15 TSL's. Think it would fit? Anyone have any input?

33" tires will require a lot of trimming on a true 3" lift. Beware; there are many lift kit companies who advertise 3", 4", 5", 6" lifts that do not give you the actual advertised lift. I'm running a true 4" kit, and I would have to do trimming for a 33" tire, especially for full flex.

if youre willing to cut they will fit. you will likely also have to add bumpstops which will limit your flex on a kit like that. many people advise to stay away from add-a-leaf lifts like that one you posted. they can ride very rough and not flex very well.

Thanks for the advise guys. I know I deff wanna run 33's. I'm not afraid to hack the body of this thing up so I'm willing to trim.

I did a ton of research before buying a lift. I concluded that the DPG OME hybrid kit was by far the best kit for ride quality, flex, fit and function. OME leaf springs come in different spring rates, plus you can add a leaf for height. OME springs (front and rear) do not sag as easily overtime as some other springs. I’ve seen plenty of pictures of broken springs (front and rear) by other manufacturers, including Rubicon Express.

Yeah OME is what I put on the KJ. I love it. It's a lil more than what I wanna spend on this rig though, but I guess it would be worth it because you get what you pay for.

Well here are some pictures of Project Turd from today. We are gutting the interior getting ready for some bedlinner. On down the road we'll do a cage and 4buckets with 5-point belts. Image

looks like a fairly good starting point for a nice trail rig.
