It really depends on your preference. I would focus on buying what you feel meets your criteria (price, color, mileage, features, accessories, etc.). Once you buy what you feel will best suit your needs, then you can modify where you need to. I’m very happy with my 2000 XJ and if I had money, I would buy another 2000/2001 XJ.

XJ's are pretty bulletproof. The 4.0 engine has tons of torque, the auto transmission is reliable, and the TC and diffs are strong. That said, the newest one you can find will already be 11 years old. Plan on doing some maintenance! I say this because I owned a 2000 XJ before my KK. I loved my XJ-- awesome truck! But certainly not the budget truck I was hoping it would be. I am glad Dieselenthusiast has had good luck with his 2000, but I had to replace the cast iron head on mine because it cracked. The 0331 heads on '00-'01 model years have about a 10-15% chance of cracking because of a defect from the foundry (see http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/how-often-do-0331-cylinder-heads-crack-please-vote-if-you-have-late-99-01-xj-68400/). If you are worried about that, the '97-'99 XJ's have the same more modern interior and exterior look, plus the dual airbags. The only reason I got rid of my XJ is because it was totaled in a freeway accident, but the little Jeep did its job and protected my wife from death by crazy drunk driver. So I have total respect and confidence in the safety of this machine. Plus, I never once got stuck. Ever.

MALiberty, are you going to keep it stock or are you going to modify it?

My plan is to keep it as stock as it is right now at least until my 2012 KK is gone.... had one offer but a bit low.

Having said stock, it already has:

2000 Jeep Cherokee - limited edition Black on black w. wood grain trim New Jasper motor With transferable 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. engine has 15,000 miles on it The truck itself has 103,000 miles on it **not a spot of rust on it** THIS TRUCK IS AS CLOSE TO MINT AS YOU WILL FIND Factory: - Leather - PWR seat, windows, and locks - ICE cold ac - Factory special edition 16" wheels w/ brand new 265/75/16 Destination AT's Additional - Rebuilt Rear Dana 35 w/ 3.73 gears AND A DETROIT LOCKER (great as an everyday driver) - 3.5" lift w/ full leaf spring (no junky add a leaf) front and rear shocks - Adjustable Trac bar - Spyder Wheel Spacers - Jasper engine W/ paper work and pictures (new belt, upper and lower coolant hoses, water pump, thermostat, heater hoses all installed with new engine) - I have driven this truck back and fourth from east granby everyday this is a realible truck and great in the snow! when i built this truck i built like jeep should have, a little more ground clearance, a little bigger tire, and a locked rear differential.

So hopefully nothing to do to it but gas it up and drive it for a while...
