One of my wife's friends has an 01 XJ that is leaking coolant horribly and over heating. I went to look at it and the radiator, water pump, hoses, etc looked ok. What I did notice is that the entire engine block was just covered in coolant. I checked the oil and it wasn't contaminated. I was thinking headgasket- but I would've thought the oil would've been mixed.

water doesnt necessarily have to find its way into the oil. if its just the head gasket you would be getting lucky but the 01+ heads are notorious for cracking. do not run the motor like this. if water is in the oil it will ruin your bearings.

The 99-01 4.0 had a head with casting problems that likes to crack if it gets the least bit hot. Chances are good that if they overheated it once, the head is cracked which would explain the coolent over the engine block.
