Let's say you get five adults who just ate and drank a lot and your XJ bottoms out and the rear wheels rub on the liner/fender flares when you hit a bump or turn. You know, theoretically. How can you tell if it's the shocks or the springs that need to be replaced? 2000 with 75k. (I suggested a lift as well but was met with this response  )

It could be a combo of sagging rear springs and worn shocks. Any idea if the shocks are originals? Does it look like the rear sits lower than the front? I would install a new set of good shocks and see if it happens again.

Thanks JJ. It seems to sit pretty level (until five full people get in. curse you Applebee's). I believe both the shocks and springs are original. Guess it's time to replace both even if only one's the issue huh? I love my Ranchos on the KJ. Do they do as well on the XJ? Keep in mind this poor thing will never see off road unless I borrow it and don't tell. :D

Looking closer at it, the rear is a smidgen lower than the front. Thanks JJ!

Yeah, your rear springs are probably going away. YOu might be able to get off cheap by looking into a load helper spring added to the rear. If you shop for new stock springs make sure they are New and not just rearched stockers as they won't last.

Here is a tech article I did some years ago, that can help you build up those stock springs to handle the extra weight, ride great, and even lift a little bit. There is a lot of reading and add on links, but please read through all of it and you can get some idears what to do with yours.

Nanette..........my rear springs were sagging...("98" with 150,000 miles on it)
the shocks were also close to worn out......I spent a WHOLE bunch of hours reasearching my options and comparing prices........New springs are insanely expensive........rearching was more affordable,,,BUT..like JJ said they tend not to stay that way.....so, not a long term option....take off springs from somebody that installed a lift may have been an option, but most of those had some miles also..(from what I reasearched stock XJ springs are notorious for sagging)...........So........hmmmm, I needed rear shocks, rear springs.........WELL HECK........that is only two front springs and two front shocks away from a lift..........
SO... I bit the bullet and bought the lift, even though my XJ will never go off road, I considered it a maintenance item  ........seriously, the OME lift rides AWESOME WAY better than stock.....PLUS....I gained some height, much easier to get in and out of....especially when your use to getting in "stretchie"............I will have the XJ for a long time, SO.....money well spent!!!

You guys are awesome! I'll pass on all I've learned. I might only remember the lift part though. :D

If you just go w/ a small lift, nobody has to know it is a "lift"

"Oh look, it sits nice and level now that we installed those new springs, I guess the front was sagging some too?"
Just don't mention it is now a couple inches taller too!

X4...........I found several used springs thru NAXJA.....problem is.they had some miles, and they might not be much better than I removed.........
SO.........NANETTE.........use the word "justification"........Tammy heard that word alot!!!! :) .......2" OME....."justified it all!!!......fixed the sagging rear springs........fixed the bad rear shocks,,,,fixed the front springs that were going to SAg eventually...and replaced the front shocks that were going to need replacing eventually...............there you have it...."Justification".....
the XJ will be around for a while, and now it rides REALLY nice, everything is fixed....and oh, yea......gained a little height

haha, ok i cant resist. So, theoretically (definitely DID NOT happen actually lol) you had 5 very full adults in your XJ and you bottomed out. Well, let's say that one time I "theoretically" fit 13 people (including me) into my 95 country to take home from the bar (i of course was sober). I "theoretically" bottomed out on the slightest bump and drove past the cops but didn't get pulled over because the windows were "theoretically" fogged up from there being so many people in the darn thing.

Totally lucky with that one! Theoretically, you can fit 9 people in a 63 Fairlane. 8)
