Anyone know of any problems or have camplaints about a 2004 Wrangler, I think it might be the sport but not 100% sure.

Checking it out tonight, paint/body looks good, new BFG AT's, hard top, not sure of the mileage yet but asking price is $8,410 so I'm thinking it could be high miles.

If it has the dana 35 rear end dont plan on going big unless you plan an axel swap as well
if it has the 4 banger then 5 speed is the trany of choice if it is the I6 the auto is just as good but I think that '04 maybe '03 was the first year for the 4 speed auto wich caused a "low hanging fruit" issue with the skid plates

Hard top is great for the cold and for long drives but no fun out on the trail ,can't see out as well
Thats all I can think of right now

Well 2004 is a pretty new jeep to be that cheap...I would be weary of some sorta damage that may have been done and fix or maybe it was in a wreck or something similar. I mean if it is just fine then that is a KILLER deal.

As far as probs, depends on certain things. Is it auto or manual? Does it have ANY sort of a lift? Spacers, budget boost, anything upgraded from the OEM parts (besides the tires obviously). Shouldnt have too many probs with a '04 but I would try to find out more history about it and see why it has such a low price for a 3 year old vehicle. My $.02 cents 8)

Ok, update:

I got out of work late and missed the dealer, but I stopped in and checked out the Wrangler anyway. It's a 2000 (not 2004) sport, all stock except for the tires. Comes with 5 brand new BFG's AT KO's and a soft top (no hard top included). Couldnt tell how many miles were on it, but looked to be in good shape minus a few chips in the paint here and there. Doors must have been taken off a few time also because there were dings there, seems to be no rust that I can see and it's a standard.

Based off of that, do you guys think it is worth pursuing further for $8,795? I still have to talk to the guy so I can haggle and I have a trade, I'm hoping to walk out at about $4,500-$5,000 or less (lol)

So is that a good thing or a bad thing? I have an appointment tomorrow for a test drive and price haggle. Appears to be a good deal

I assume you are talkin bout whether the D44 is a good thing or a bad thing right? THIS IS A GOOD THING 8) The D44 is much stronger than the D35 that is usually in the rears of those model TJs...if you plan on upgrading to a lift and bigger tires, you'll be happy that ya got the D44 back there, much beefier and the inners will last longer (in theory) than a D35 or even the D30 fronts. I can almost guarantee that the guy your buyin it from wont know what in the hell your talkin bout, so you can do one of two things to find out if ya got a 44...ask for the original sticker from the dealer that lists ALL the options/packages that are in the jeep or you can just get under the jeep and see for yourself...it should say on the axle tube or on the diff housin somewhere whether or not its a D44...you can also eyeball it too the D44 looks like this in the rear...

Image

This is the best pic I could find but it gives you a good look at what the 44 looks like in the rear...here is a pic of the D35 rear for comparison...

Image

Again not the best pic but can you see the difference?? Good luck 8)

Cool, thank you so much. I will ask and also check myself and see if he doesnt know. I planning on lifting and putting bigger tires on it, I want to use this one more as a off roader and summer vehicle so I'm planning on upgrades (as I learn about it that is). Hopefully it will work out, I havent actually driven it yet.

Easiest way to tell a dana 35 from a 44
35=ruber fill plug
44=screw fill plug

Sports with a 44 a rare but if it has trac loc then 99% it has the 44 wich are both very good things
I have a sport with trac lok and a 44 so I know that they come with them

Still looking but thought I would update this since I went by again this morning and the Jeep is still there.

It's a 2000, not 2004 and was willing to take $8,000 but willing to haggle...The downfall, it has 94,000 miles!

He may be willing to make more of a deal now that it's been there for a while but I dont know if it's worth the cash for a high mile Jeep. Are there generally a lot of problems when you hit this amount of miles?

I've never had that many miles on a vehicle before, but from everything I've read says that the 4.0 should last easily to 200k if all scheduled maintenence is done correctly.

if it's a 4.0 with the 44 then maybe but that is still very steep
I got mine when it had 28K miles not a scrach still under factory warranty
it had the dana 44 with a 4.0 and an auto with 3.73's (rarest of the rare from what I read)
I also got a hard and soft top full doors and cruise control oh and AC :D
and I got it for ~$16,000 so either I got a great deal or that is steep

I did need tires but that was nothing

The 4.0 will go 200K+ like stated before if well maintained...mine is nowhere near this mark and probably never will be as it will be a trailer king in a year or so, BUT I do have a friend whos TJ has well over 125K and still runnin strong and another who has an XJ with almost 175K...both with the 4.0...I would offer $6k for it and see what they say, $8k is kinda steep I would agree

Really....I didnt think they would last that long. According to consumer reports, I think that was one of the least favorable yeats (then again, I'm sure that's not the best source).

I guess I just worried because I dont know if it was a beat on offroader or a DD or what. From the looks of it, the doors have been removed off the hidges often (few nicks here and there), minor rusting on the spare rim but other than that it looks good.

I'm sure I can get him down, has been on the lot for quiet a while. I just have never bought anything with that many miles.

Thanks for the imput everyone!

Personally, if your getting it for a weekend toy, you should be ok with that mileage. If its going to be a daily driver/weekend toy then definitely try and talk them down more on the price.

Oh I would try to talk him down regardless, that's an unwritten law!

It would be both a DD and weekend toy, the wife to be will probably take the Liberty as hers (which I will still be driving anyway) and I'm going to use the Wrangler if/when I get one. That's why the 94K made me nervous.

Ideally, I would love to get him down to about $7K then break out the two trade in's (estimated value $4,000) and get it to about $5K (or less) but I dont have that kind of luck!
