So I've been wondering how to keep all my tools and junk in the Jeep when the top is down without fear that someone will steal something. I don't have 300+ bucks for a Tuffy security box so I thought outside the "box" for a way to secure my stuff. Since I have run without a back seat since two months after I got the Jeep, I thought I could bolt something down to the seat brackets. So I went to my local Wallyworld and found a lockable storage box. It cost less than $20. Next stop was the hardware store for some steel and assorted hardware. Total there was around 15 bucks.
Now for the install. The first thing to do was install some pipe clamps to the seat brackets.
Then I laid out the steel frame.
Marked out and drilled holes in the bottom of the storage box.
Then I assembled the framework. The crossbars will attach to the pipe hangers on the seat brackets. And the braces are inside the box bolted to the crossbars underneath.
Then I just had to bolt the frame to the seat brackets. And it is facing the front so I have easy access from the driver seat.
Stick on a padlock I had laying in the bottom of my toolbox and Voila, cheap security for under 50 bucks. The only way somebody is going to steal my stuff now is if they come prepared with a full wrench set. It may not be completely tamper proof but it will slow somebody down enough to make them think twice about whether or not it's worth the effort and probably walk away. Let me know what ya'll think about it.
