Would use as second car for a daily driver in the winter and offroad/fun car for the summer. Is this worth investing in and what do you think about the price?

1993 Jeep Wrangler YJ 4x4, Sahara Edition, 5 speed standard, 176k miles. (125k on engine)
Fluids changed regularly, no rust, floors have been bed lined, new windshield frame and glass, good tires, off road lights. aftermarket Pioneer CD with Alpine speakers, aftermarket side view mirrors.
Also includes: 2 ton jack, hard top & bikini top, 2 towers, 2 original side view mirrors, emergency battery kit, security lug nuts and anti theft system.
Looks great, drives great, get in and go. $3,700. or b/o.

Sounds like a good deal to me. Find out if it has the D44 or D35 in the rear; open or LSD. If you are going to make this a play toy, an open D44 is what I hope you find...

The only thing that worried me was the mileage, I do have to use this as a primary DD during the winter. I have heard they have a rep of lasting forever though.

But why is there less mileage on the engine than the rest of the Jeep? Did they swap from a 4 banger to the straight six? Or did the original I-6 blow at only 50K? Other than that it sounds like a good deal. Heck them YJ's are almost classic Jeeps now.

Not sure, waiting on a response from the seller. Then I can ask some more questions. I thought it sounded ok but just wanted to check first, I dont know that much about older Wranglers. Anything else?

I already have been pricing out a lift and tires (Rubicon Express 4") if eveything checks out.

Sounds like an okay deal to me. I'm guess the original 4.0L went at 100K+ miles, but the replacement engine they got had a lot of miles on it too. I don't think they replaced the engine at 50K miles.

I highly doubt you'll find a D44 or LSD under that thing unless someone put one in  It's going to be an open D35 from the factory (unless it's one of those super rare YJs from Canada that had the D44).

I know of plenty 4.0L engines still going strong at 300K miles.

Look in the Midwest Holloween trip report, there will be a '06 Rubi with 12k and a new engine now. Stuff happens

I got an email from the guy, said nothing else is wrong with the Jeep to his knowledge and he currently still uses it as a DD so it runs fine. Has a D35, tires are BFG's with less than 5K on them, both tops (hard+soft) are in good shape with no rips/tears.

Calling him tonight and going to check it out within the next few days I hope, anything else I should ask or be worried about. Also, price is $3,700 OBO, is this a decent price or should I try to squeeze a little off the top. KBB has it at $3,770 in fair condition.

Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure. I had a good deal a few weeks back and didnt jump on it so I lost it, dont want to miss this opportunity if it's a good one. Already online pricing lifts and tires for it LOL.

Thanks for all your help/advice.

Assuming the body is rust free and there is no body damage and the interior is in good shape, the $3700 asking price seems to be fair. But like always, you always offer less and go from there. I say offer $3000 and see if he takes it.

True, I will get a better feel for it when I actually see it and drive it in person. If all checks out, then I can work from there. I like that it is bed lined inside too.

I will be psyched if this works out, I have been on the hunt for a while and didnt think I would find anything in my price range. There are a lot of good deals out there, I just couldnt seem to find anything local.

I will have to price out lift installs next, looking at the Rubicon Express 4" kit.

If the fluids had always been changed regularly, then the motor wouldn't have ever gone *POP* IMO. Granted, my '95 XJ looks like it was well maintained and it rattles like a coffee can full of pennies

if this isn't gonna be your day in/day out daily driver, I'd say snag it. check the area on the frame near the rear shackles though, and make sure there's no rust-through there. Just give it a thorough going-over (crawl under it with a flashlight, check the floorpans, etc) before buying and if there's anything that YOU don't feel like dealing with, make the call. I don't think it's a bad deal.

Go with stick, and offer $3k. if he takes it, great...if not, work up to what you're comfortable paying

Good point, didnt think of that. I will bring my trusty flash light and check it over really well.

That's the thing, for the winter I need it for a DD because my wife will be using the KJ for the winter. I plan on modding it and using it offroad in the summer and will hopefully have something new for the wife and I will go back to the KJ as a DD after that. I just need to make sure this will be reliable thru the winter as a means to get to work

Just a few words of caution. A Wrangler is not the best winter DD. Don't get me wrong, they do great in really deep snow, but the short wheel base and overall size makes them want to spin around like a top in ice and light snow. I would much rather drive my XJ or KJ in the winter any day over my YJ. If you only drive a Wrangler, you probably wouldn't notice it, but if you're used to driving the KJ in the winter, the YJ is going to handle completely different.

Agreed@driving an open-top Jeep in the snow. My CJ was AWFUL. I always assumed it was my tires (hence why I only drove it for part of one winter)

Really? I thought it would be the same or better than the KJ. Not that we get a whole lot of snow around here, but I would need to drive it if it did snow. Especially if my wife takes the KJ.

x2 the 4.0 is a tank. Make sure you find out why a swap was made on the engines...

I had a '92 YJ that I finally got rid of with some 350K on the odometer. The 4.0 was still running strong, only thing ever done inside was lifters at 110K (they were just noisy). I think if I found a decent one now for $3500 or so, I'd be sorely tempted to buy it.
