I was out touching up the paint on my swingout tire carrier today. (cleaning up the winter surface rust) I noticed that the pin that holds it open is digging a nice little trench into not just the paint but into the plate that it slides on. Does anyone know of a way to make it slide more smoothly so I don't need to worry about touching up the paint there all the time? It's the part with the t-handle next to the hinge in this picture.

Can you not hold that pin up when it is moving so it doesn't drag?

It's spring loaded to push down so when it gets to the hole in the plate, it snaps in. So you can pull it up when it's in the hole but the spring is pretty well compressed when it's in any other position. So it basically only comes up far enough to clear the hole. Sorry no close ups, my camera is on the fritz. Maybe tomorrow I can try and take one with my phone.
