Looking at a used 2004 TJ for a 2nd jeep. It has high miles for the year, but the owner says it's because it was towed behind an RV. Does the Odometer move if its flat towed? I didn't think it did...

Thanks in advance.

Yep. If the tires are turning, the OD will clock up.

If the driveline is connected then it will register miles. If it had been towed with the driveline disconnected then you'd probably be thinking the miles were way too low... 8)

Unfortunately, I have to disagree with the other posts. My 04 TJ never registered the miles when I was towing it and I towed it about 10,000 miles.

The guy is BS'ing you about the high mileage, I would get away from that deal.

I was just thinking this one over the other day. I'm working on towing to Moab and wondering about flat tow, or get a U-Haul car trailer deal (not a tow dolly) and drag it up there that way. I posted the question on another board, so we will see what happens.

Do the trailer. Wont put miles on the TJ (if it does regester) and it wont kill your gas. The less resistance to tow, the better.

According to the Owners Manual on a TJ you can NOT use a tow dolly. You have to tow 4 down or on a full trailer.

We have towed a TJ about 30K miles behind a motorhome with no problems. We also tow the Liberty 4 down at least a couple of times a year.

Thanks for the responses. I'm probably going to pass on the deal - didn't work out.

Regarding towing a TJ, the big advantage of a trailer is brakes, but a lot depends on how hefty your tow rig is. A motor home? Wouldn't worry. A KJ...I'd probably want brakes. You can add tow brakes to a flat towed vehicle, but the kit is kind of spendy.
