I just bought a 1986 CJ, got it home, and found the key is stuck in the ignition. Any ideas as to how to remove it? |

Turn the steering wheel abruptly (almost violently) from side to side and then try to take the key out. If that doesn't work, something's probably broken. |

Try to spary some silicone or graphite into the cylider or remove the cylinder from the vehicle and take it to a locksmith. |

How hard is it to take the cylinder out? |

Grab a $100 bill and a phone and call AAA....I broke my key off in the ignition a few months ago and that was the only thing that fixed my predicament. |

my 85 has a little release lever, but your appears to not have one. I replaced the cylinder in mine this last spring. Used the Chiltons manual to do it. Relatively straight forwar. I think it took us in total about 5 hours, but I'm sure it could be done much faster. Have to take off wheel, so you'll need a steering wheel puller (rent one). I'd try the graphite first. Have you had the key out before? You can also somehow break the locking mechinism by turning it. Will break the lock, so you will not even need a key to start it. hope that helps, mike |

Dad and I replaced the cylinder in his CJ5 last summer. It took a few hours, but that was mainly because we couldn't get the steering wheel off. A steering wheel puller would be a big help. If you don't have one, try this: remove the horn button and horn, have someone sit in the driver's seat and pull on the steering wheel while someone else lightly taps the center nut with a hammer. Keep pulling and tapping. It should come off. Like I said, much easier with a steering wheel puller. Then follow a Chilton's manual or Hayes manual and that should tell you have to do everything else. Pretty straight forward once you get the steering wheel off. |
