can i go from a bushwhacker 6 inch bigger flare back to the stock size one with no problems whatsoever? It looks like its just an unscrew and pop off repeat backwards to install, but if any of you have installed fenders or stock flares on a tj please let me know. Im pretty sure there isnt any problem going back to stock flares besides paying for them, just need to confirm THANKS

You can switch them back but if the bushwackers are bigger or smaller they will have scuffed the paint for sure. I can see behind my stock rubicon flairs where some sand and dirt has messed up the paint a little.

Im not going to start the whole its a jeep thing again but you dont get any snow or road salt out there. Scuffed paint plus road salt equals corrosion.

Naw no road salt but Id wadger a guess you aint been to the Sierras  No debate needed, continue with the thread...if your worried bout corrosion, little sand paper and a rattle can will do the trick

Get rid of the chrome for sure. I personally like the look of those flares though. Even if you don't, you might want to wait till you break one on the trail before you go messing with changing them.

It's not mine YET, just one of the few that I am considering and needed to know if I could return it to stock-looking before committing to buying it. Its pretty much boiling down to getting an automatic over manual (in SWB) or a LJ manual over a TJ manual. Decisions decisions...

Another vote for keeping the flares, but loosing the chrome.

Otto...something that I think should be looked at since you're looking at Rubicons that are most likely pavement pounders that have never seen dirt...and the picture of that chromed out Rubicon reminded me of something

look at the tires and make sure they're not dry-rotted. a LOT of these pavement pounding Jeepers spend as much money on tire shine as they do chrome, and unless it's the Michelin stuff, it makes rubber dry rot like there's no tomorrow. it's NASTY.

aye aye (dry rot would be indicated by fine lines on the sidewalls, correct? sorta flaky sidewalls?) Would the dealer replace the tires for free if I discover that the tires are dry rotted? I think i will be headed to look at them this coming weekend or over thanksgiving holidays! Gotta get the stock wheels back on the kj this week... The white one I posted a pic of is particularly appealing for that very reason that it has those chrome steps and such on it that I almost guarantee it has never been off road. Ill be checking for scratches and such on the skid plates anyways just to make sure. Hopefully the interior isn't all stained up or anything, too bad it has the awful tan interior. Will be a definite change from my leather heated seats in the kj, but at this point I really dont care at all about the interior as long as its got a heater in it and a stereo that works.

Oh, and another thing, this jeep has that chrome cover for the gas cap... Is that easy to take off and replace?
edit: this sucker

they won't necessarily replace the tires. I'd definitely work that into my dealings, though. dryrotted tires are unsafe.

You'll notice a lot of cracking on the sidewalls...it'll look sorta like dried up mud, but on a much smaller scale. Tell the dealer that you refuse to buy the Jeep until those tires are replaced with the SAME tire (which would be a 245/75-16 Goodyear MT/R, as you know). Very helpful if you're looking to keep it stock and wheel it;)

ive been looking all over for a stock cover but all I can find is a black fuel filler door of the same style of the chrome one made by bestop (for abotu 100 bucks). Anyone know where to get the stock fuel door/recession plastic jiggy (best way i can describe it hahahah)?

Ask round on the forums would be a good bet. Also junkers from the yards will have these things. Fleabay (eBay) will prolly get a few now and again...look around 8)

EDIT: Found these for sale on eBay...hope this helps...

Just apply a good sealant over the scratches. That what I do. Now my custom trail pinstripping is shiney.
