Post subject:  tranny cooler

Trying to get some other thoughts on tranny coolers. I have an 05 LJ, auto. I have a little j series pop up I pull behind it from time to time. The LJ is rated at 3500lbs and the camper fully loaded is about 2300lbs I am fixing to take a trip to where I will be pulling it through some serious hills and was just wandering what some thoughts were on it.

Hummmm well a tranny cooler would be a good thing to do. They are pretty easy to install and sure will help save your tranny. There are a few after market brands that I have seen on Summit Racing as well as other availible. I am sure Dave @ Northridge could get you a good set up as well.

You have the 4 speed so #1 when going up hill turn off OD
I have a cooler that 4wd hard ware sells by flex a lite that I just installed and the PN on the box is 3812
I installed it on the return side or the radiator so that the HOT trans fluid goes through the radiator then through the cooler
then back to the tranny ,it is on the front side of the radiator
I also have an electric pusher fan to help cool the engine but it is next to the tranny cooler so only the engine fan pulls air over the tranny cooler ,if I find that this is not enough cooling power for the tranny I will get the cooler with the little fan on it
and put it in the place of the one I have and move the one I have now under the hood but put it on the power steering as it has no cooler now so this would be a 100% up grade
If I were you I wold get the cooler for the tranny ,for $30 bucks it can not hurt

I appreciate it guys. So I should get one without the fan? And the cooler itself mounts up front by the main radiator? I know nothing about the install on these. I am sure I will figure it out but you seem to know these things pretty good.

Just based on what you said I would get the one with out the fan
The one with the fan is over $150 and way more than you need
It will mount up in front of the condenser for the AC which looks just like the radiator but way thinner and is in front of the radiator
it will have some "through core" mounts that comes with it just make sure that there is NO metal on metal contact and you will be fine
The reason that I would get the one with the fan for my rig is that it sees HARD trail duty and gets really hot in the summer
remember that some times the out side air is 95-100* here and 95% humidity so I run harder trails with the top up and AC on
making the engine and tranny work its @ss off

Check out Stu's site, he has a pretty good write up on doing tranny coolers. You may not want to get this elaborate, but it does have some good info on it.

http://stu-offroad.com/engine/transcool ... cool-1.htm

Stu has tons of info for the TJ's which of course most crosses over to the LJ's.

When working on the Rubi I keep his site up in the garage on my computer. His site has helped me through many different upgrades through the years.
