Post subject:  YJ and liberty Axles...

My Liberty died and I picked up a 92 YJ at a good price. thing runs, so yay!

The liberty has a 30a and an 8.25. I put a truetrac in the 30a and an ARB in the 8.25, both got regeared to 4:10. A mechanic buddy is swapping these axles for the stock ones.

Question is this...

I know the gears from the 30a won't fit a regular 30, but does anyone know the Detroit Tru-Trac model that would go into the regular 30?

Anyone ever heard or seen someone put an 8.25 from a liberty on a wrangler?

figure if it would work, It's already locked, regeared and better than a d35.

The TT should fit the 30 but the gears will not ,you know that

You "can" put the 8.25 in to the rear of the YJ but it will take a good bit of work
you will need to remove the spring buckets and shock mounts
Then weld on YJ spring plates
I know that they sell kits to do a Ford 8.8 in a YJ but the 8.25 may have a different axle tube OD I dont know

another thought for you is while you are going to be welding on spring plates is to go spring over
you can do the front at the same time
New shocks and a T-case drop for now ,an SYE when funds permit if its an issue
for about $500 you get 3" of lift
this along with 4.10's locker/LSD and 33's and you got a good trail rig

also keep in mind that if you decide to keep the current rear end and just regear then you may need to replace the carrier
this means more money and it has the dana turdy 5 installing the 8.25 is a much better option

tranny died. Was driving to work tuesday before last and got a nice grinding sound when I put it in 5th. After that, ONLY 4th worked, which is the "limp" gear on a manual.

We were going to be trading it in in August on a civic hybrid and switching the stuff to my wife's 06 libby. So i already had everything that wasn't bolted down taken out of it. The dealer said $2500 for the liberty as-is, $3000 fixed.

So I put the stock axles back on and now have the 2 built axles sitting in the garage. fulltimer, I have no problem selling the from case, probably not just the gears, but the whole pumkin. I have a list of people that wanted stuff from when I did a feeler a while ago. I'll go through that list and see who wants what, but you'll be on it for the front pumpkin.

Was going to cost $800 for a used tranny. so what's the point of fixing it? I ended up getting a '92 YJ for 1k. Was an absolute steal. Engine is string, tranny is smooth, it's an auto, but oh well. now I can trade the liberty, and still have a Jeep without needing to hack my wife's '06 to crap, specially with a new baby (6-weeks old now!)
