The CJ is never going to be a street vehicle and is going to be trailered where ever it goes, but I'm to the point in my build where I'd like to drive at least out of the driveway to make sure things work.

I will need some kind of liability insurance on it in-case it blows up or falls over onto someone at a park so I've a few questions on this process...

The only original part of the CJ is the engine area - the back half of the frame has been remade and I'd like to swap axles. The VIN dog tag is hanging on by a thread...

- Do I need plates to get basic liability insurance?
- If I get plates do I need to register the vehicle?
- Since I've modified more than half the frame and really only the engine area is intact ( for now ) does the VIN still apply?

Thanks for any input :D

you can insure it with just the vin plate. You can tag it too as long as it will pass inspection if you have one. I have tagged all of my offroad toys here just in case I wanted to run to the store and scare soccer moms.

I believe that there are some parks, most noteably national forests, that require a vehicle to be licensed as well so you may want to take that into consideration when determining whether you want to get plates. As for the insurance, that's up to you. My TJ is insured but it's occasionally a daily driver and definitely won't be trailered since I don't have a vehicle thta could tow it.
