This article is about the future of the Viper, but it also states some pretty heavy things about the future of the Wrangler. As in, it may not have a future.

The Jeep brand has been owned by a number of different entities over it's lifetime. At one time it was part of AMC (American Motors Corp). It was a disaster when AMC had it.

Since Mercedes and Chrysler have had it I see too much plastic and too much use of 'crossover' parts from Dodge such as the outside door handles. IMHO, Chrysler has cheapened the Jeep brand and I hope it emerges as a part of a more progressive company.

The next few years will be interesting in the automotive business.

Someone here is missing some info. The death of the Viper was announced months ago, before any of this Fiat talk or bamkruptcy began. cerebus had said it would not be replaced. This is not new news at all.

I am beating that jeep, in the form of the original CJ style, will survive.

also keep in mind that Fiat is not going to be the sole owner of Chrysler.

If any Jeep survives, it will be the CJ/Wrangler body style.
It was born that way, and will die that way.

I loved my CJ! (got married, need I say more?)

Viper discontinuation rumors abounded at the Chrysler stealership as early as 2006 AFATBJR

Well said. I too would like to see a company take Jeep over that would return it to its roots as rugged 4x4 vehicles.

I may get crap for this, but I think the best years for
Jeep were the AMC years.

Tom ( & Cody, the Dog) I agree with you. Their engines were dandy, they bought some of the best transmissions available in the TH400, 727, & T18, and used much better Dana axles than the earlier manufacturers. The D20 is considered the best size/weight trade-off x-fer out there. Cast iron & gear-to-gear, the best way until the whiners with the " oh, it is too loud..I needs a chain" killed it.

I loved by cj2a, but even before I put the JEEP 225 in it, the rear D41 axles broke with 32" tires and the front D25 was a turd, and it is the direct forebear of the 27, 30, & 30A.

Willys & Kaiser were romantic, but until AMC ran out of capital and had to partner with Renault ( sound familiar?) they were doing pretty well.

AMC still lives, in a way. Rather then sell the whole works to Chrysler, they broke of AM General and it still exists- making Humvees ( from the original AMC design, for the most part) & big trucks.
