MY wife and I are thinking about getting rid of our roadster convertible and getting a Jeep Wrangler. We test drove a JK Unlimited Rubicon last Friday and even my wife fell in love with the thing. What an awesome truck!

But I need to go drive a TJ Unlimited Rubi, because that might work just as well, or better, for our needs.

Does anyone know if there are any know problems with the TJ Rubis that I should be aware of?

If you can test drive both over some rough terrain you will Love the JK even more. The ride of the JK is hands down a Ton better then a TJ.
Of course the 4.0L almost makes up for that........ :?

x2 JK's ride like cars... on and offroad. a TJ still feels like a jeep. depends what you want really. TJ's are more rugged.. even down to the steel flip door handles where the JK has minivan door handles.. can get power locks/windows.. esp....

if you can swing the $ i'd go for a JK... much easier to get 35's under it.. still an unlimited parts bin and has the manors of a car with the look and performance of a jeep. plus with the rubi you get front/rear lockers, better axles than the TJ rubi's, and push button sway bar disco's.

I've owned both a TJ and a JK. I loved them both. If it was in my budget I'd lean towards the JK. It's a little bigger, rides a little better, is much quieter (my soft top JK is quieter than my liberty renegade), and is easier to lift. The JK is definately slower than the TJ. A lot of people fault the 3.8 liter, but actually I think the 3.8 liter is a little smoother and has a little more power than the 4.0. It's just that the JK is heavier. While the 3.8 liter should be a good dependable engine the 4.0 is pretty well known for being bullet proof.

If both are in your budget, just drive both and go with your gut.

X2 on what he said! Though if a LJ is a possibility, look at the regular 2 door JK also, almost the same size as the old unlimiteds. Particular reason it has to be a Rubi? If not I'm seeing a lot of new JK 2 Door X's for less than some used TJ's.

Take a ride in my TJ with 33's and then a JK with 33's and you will forget what a TJ is! Ride wise anyway. Off road a TJ in my opinion is a little tougher. Alot less plastic than the JK. I still will be in a JK rubicon as my dd if I can ever get rid of my 2005 F150.

The TJ Rubis' front 44 is actually a hybrid axle. It has the 44 center section but Dana 30 outers. That being said, the JK Rubi front 44 is high pinion and the shafts themselves are supposed to be stronger, but the tubes are more prone to bending because of the extra width of the axle. And the lockers on the TJ Rubi are air vs electric on the JK. I bought my LJ back in 06 but sometimes I see a nice JK rolling around my area and wish I had waited a few more months till the 07s came out. The improved on road ride would have been better for me since I don't wheel anywhere near as much as I'd like. I have yet to actually drive a JK though because I'm afraid if I do, I won't be able to resist the temptation to trade in for one.

I don't think the width has much to do with it. All of the big 3 used D44's under the front of 1/2 & 3/4 ton pickups up around the 70" width mark. Daimler, the a-holes they were, cheaped out on the material spec or the tube wall thickness. Wonder what will show up when they get a few years on them?
