Post subject:  Upgrading to a 6 cylinder engine

So if no one buys my TJ because it's a 4 cylinder (see for sale section), I'm curious to know what is involved in "upgrading" my Jeep to a 6 cylinder engine. Besides the computer, engine, and fuel pump is there anything else? What about the transmission? Will the 6 cylinder connect right up to it? Any ballpark idea on expense for this type of work?

Which 4 cylinder do you have the 2.5 or the 2.4?

Besides engine, all computers and wiring harnesses, fuel pump, you will also need to weld in new motor mounts, IIRC a new crossmember, depending on the engine, you may need a new bell housing for the tranny, or a new transmission altogether. You'll also need a new radiator, driveshafts front and rear, and if IIRC a new power steering pump.

Honestly, for the time effort an money... Forget the 4.0 it's a great engine, but it's performance gains over the 4 cylinder just aren't that huge. If you are going to do an engine swap, do a SB V8. It will be the same amount of work, and relatively the same amount of cash, plus the gains will be much better.

**Edit - Looked in the for sale section, you have the 2.4, so I believe you just need the bell housing for the 4.0l NSG370 **

I am pretty sure that the NSG370 has an integral bellhousing that can't be swapped???

The 2.4 has more HP than many I6 jeeps. To me, a bigger concern would be the D35.

go to www.jeepforums.com and look around. there
are a few guys that have done the swap with relative
ease.

Are you sure its a Sport and not a SE? All sport had I6, if it's the 98 SE it has the 2.5. I ve herd it a pain, and not worth the money for that swap!!

Doesn't matter anyway anymore, he already traded it in on another KJ.
