Well my 14yr old son just bought a 1999 TJ so now we have 4 Jeeps......Ugh!

The mother in law of a friend of mine couldn't drive it any more due to medical problems (she had a fender bender in it recently because of a seizure) so she decided to basically sell it for what she owed on it....... $3200!!! It is green w/ 4.0L/Auto, hard top, immaculate interior, Never been in 4wd, about 120k freeway miles, good stereo w/ sound bar, custom aluminum rims, etc......

It Does need the right front fender straightened very slightly and that flare replaced (cake) and the lower ctrl arm bracket on that side is bent...but I am just going to toss a HPD30 out of a junkyard XJ in there and call it a day (for now).

Of course the mods are already planned and it will be wearing Moabs and MT/R's right away along w/ whatever budget boost we can grab up cheap for now.

Wow, I'm jealous......my 14 yr old has a TJ......sheesh. :?

I got my first Jeep at 16 and it cost me $3,500. It was a 78 CJ-5 though and not a 99 TJ. All in all we have had 2 YJs, 2 TJs, 2 CJs, a ZJ, and a KJ in my family. 6 out of those Jeep were mine too. :D

Funny thing is just yesterday we were shopping for a baja bug project and then today this deal pops up. Of course I had to sway toward the Jeep since it was a steal.

I tell ya, this kid deserves it though. He is in a college/high school program where he attends high school classes through our local college and earns both HS and college credits. He has taken both intersession and Summer school classes and starts his sophomore year this Fall taking College Spanish and finishing up his last year of college PE already. When he graduates HS he should have very close to or all of the credits he needs for his AA/AS. This past year he maintained a 3.5 GPA and we have Never had to tell him to work on his school work or study, even during the baseball season when he had late games and practices. (yeah I'm proud, can ya tell? :D )

Anyhow, the Deal was he had saved up about $1200 and we agreed long ago to double whatever he came up with so it was close enough to move on it. He is ready to work off the rest and can't wait to get a real job. AAA tows it to our house tomorrow afternoon so i'll get some pics posted up tomorrow night. Looking forward to playing with it until he starts driving...... hehehe

Well turns out it has a D35 rear (oh well) but it does have limited slip and 3.73's which will be Ok for a while. Damage is minor, check the pics:

Only body damage

Axle damage

Not bad, I have seen worse on daily driven Jeeps.

My son spent quite some time climbing around inside it w/ friends after it got towed home. He is jazzed. (says 1st thing that has to go is the Raider fan plates and sticker on rear window  )

I am by no means an expert, but I believe the front axles of XJs and those of TJs are not interchangeable.

Also, Aren't those the Gambler wheels? I thought they were factory?

Either way...NICE SCORE! My first Jeep was nowhere near that complete when I bought it

I will double check but AFAIK it is a bolt in. I know many TJ owners upgrade to the HPD30 over the low pinion in the later models......heck, I am not even positive what it has since I didn't look at the back side of the front diff yet to see...... :lol:IIRC it was around 98/99 that they switched XJ's over to LPD30s and pretty sure the TJ's too though I don't know for sure if maybe they were Always LP. I can always compare my XJ to the TJ to be sure it will work.
I will be trying my darndest to bend that bracket back into place 1st though, hopefully I can just fix it for now and upgrade later.....I mean my Son can upgrade later.....

Anyhow, he spent some quality time w/ it last night washing it and might wax it tonight. I am still amazed at how well the interior was kept up. There is no wear on anything inside. It looks like a low mileage vehicle, heck my KJ shows more interior wear and tear....and dirt. We had to jump start it as the batt was dead but it fired right up and purred like a kitten. This is going to be a fun project..... Son is anxious to get the welder fired up to make some home-made goodies for it. I might have to get him to sign up for a night welding class at the college. (extra credits can't hurt!)

Update on last post.... More research shows the XJ front HPD30 as a Direct bolt-in to replace a LPD30 in a TJ.

Yeah now that I can see the pics, I see what I already have on the side of my house waiting....Moabs. Mine have Rubi MT/R's on them already. 8)

Lets just say that Sean is excited. :D

I knocked the LCA mount back into good enough shape to drive until we can get it replaced the right way, and then found the steering box is just dumping fluid out of the pitman shaft seal....UGH!

Good news though....

Well Sean scored some freebies to start the budget build. A set of newer Rubicon springs and some 2" spacers will get the belly up a bit and some nice, longer shocks to go w/ it. Also got a set of Rubicon rocker covers for a little style and bit of protection plus a set of better condition flares, some factory fog lights, rear tow hook, some JKS quick discos, rear trac bar relocator, a Non-Leaking steering box to replace our leaker and some All J Products stickers. THANKS ALL J for the budget hook up!!

I'll throw in my set of Rubi tire/wheel take offs and she should be looking much better in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for build and progress pics.

Yes but nothing too exciting..... Got the title/registration handled today and a temp driving pass till smogged and new plates show up so we can now at least drive it legally.

It is a slow build for sure since he can't drive it for a while anyhow. Right now it is just the basics, tune-up, lube changes, etc. and then we will go get the lower ctrl arm brackets replaced, alignment, then start on the lift, etc.

Ok, I lied....we got the Rubicon rocker covers installed today.
Image

Big improvement over that plastic doohickey that used to be there. Sure they are more bling than real function but looks good and will go nice w/ the Boulderbars.com bars that will eventually go on there. Also showing is the cleaned up and UV coated hard top that looks a million times better now, you can actually see that the Jeep is a green color now that the faded top is gone.
